'Super Saturday' Scheduled at DSLCC February 27

Several departments at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College will partner to offer “Super Saturdays”, on February 20 at the DSLCC Rockbridge Regional Center and on February 27 in the DSLCC Armory/Convocation Center on the main campus in Clifton Forge. These events are offered to help students and parents apply for financial aid to assist with the cost of attending college. Each Super Saturday will be held from 9 am to 3 pm.

“Staff members from Educational Talent Search, Student Support Services and the Admissions Office will be on hand to assist all students with the financial process in filling out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)” , said Christie Hardbarger, director of Talent Search. As part of its mission to serve the community, DSLCC will offer this service to all students, regardless of their college destination. Tech Prep Career Coaches will also be on hand to help those students who wish to fill out a DSLCC application or to research careers. Students who are already college students and need help with a FAFSA renewal will also be eligible to receive assistance from other members of the DSLCC staff.

Any student who attends “Super Saturday” to fill out a FAFSA form and completes a DSLCC application for admission is eligible for a drawing for two scholarships in the amount of $150 each. Lynda Thompson, executive director of the DSLCC Educational Foundation which is providing the scholarships, may be reached at 540/863-2837 to answer questions about the scholarship program.

Information about Student Support Services will be available, including details on small group support instruction, tutoring, drop-in lab, academic advising, and transfer exploration trips to four-year colleges and universities.

“Students will have the opportunity to find out about the various occupational, technical and allied health programs, the transfer programs, and articulation and guaranteed admissions agreements that are in place with DSLCC and more than 35 other colleges and universities,” added Dr. Michael Scott, Vice President for Instruction, Student Services and Research. “This is a great opportunity to ask questions and receive individual assistance with completing these college forms.” Campus tours will also be offered.

Students and families are welcome to attend either session -- Saturday the 20th at the RRC or Saturday the 27th on the main campus in Clifton Forge. Students and/or parents may make an appointment for either event by calling the Talent Search office at 863-2873, or they may simply “walk in” the day of the event. Parents desiring to complete the FAFSA should bring completed tax forms and W-2 statements for the parents and student. For more information, contact 540-863-2874.
