| Clifton Forge, VA (Feb. 15, 2010) – Clifton Forge Main Street Inc. and the Alleghany Highlands YMCA announced today that the second annual Alleghany Highlands Triathlon has been scheduled for Saturday, May 22, 2010, in Alleghany County, Va. The starting gun will go off at 9 a.m. at the Alleghany Highlands YMCA in Low Moor.
The race starts with a 5K run followed by a 5K paddle down the Jackson River. The final stage of the race is a 16K bicycle race to finish at Douthat State Park. A post-race picnic will immediately follow. Prizes will be awarded for the first, second and third place overall finishers, and the first place finisher in each category. Registration is underway now. The $47 per person early-bird entry fee includes the race, picnic and a T-shirt.
The premier corporate sponsor of the event is Shentel, the area’s newest Internet and cable service provider. Christopher Kyle, Shentel Director of Marketing, said, “Shentel is looking forward to being the premiere sponsor of the race again this year. Just as the triathlon is a race with three parts, in 2010 Shentel will be adding Home Phone to its services and bringing a triple play bundle to the Highlands. Everyone will win with the Shentel Triple Play.”
Additional corporate sponsors include Riders Up! Outfitters, Pepsi Bottling Group, Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce, roanokeoutside.com and Old Forge Coffee Company. Race photography will be provided by Chuck Almarez of Fire & Light Gallery.
According to Jim Bay, one of the event organizers: “Last year’s event was a huge success and we are planning for an even bigger and better race this year. Although this is a recreational triathlon, it promises to be competitive enough for veterans. It is also a great race if you’ve never entered a triathlon before. Teams are welcome and entries are limited so, first-come, first-served.”
