Scholarships Available for Continuing DSLCC Students

Clifton Forge, VA (March 2, 2010) - The Dabney S. Lancaster Community College Educational Foundation has announced that Lancaster Scholarships for Continuing Students are available for current, qualified DSLCC students who wish to continue their studies at DSLCC for a second year or third year. Lancaster Scholarships are funded from proceeds from the Foundation’s bi-annual fundraiser, “Bubbles, Bands, and Brunch,” according to Scholarship Committee Chairman, Donna Vaughn. “Without the generosity and support of area businesses and individuals for the ‘Bubbles, Bands and Brunch” fundraiser, the Educational Foundation would not be able to fulfill a long-term goal of providing scholarship opportunities for students who have completed a full year at DSLCC and wish to complete their studies,” explained Vaughn. “The need for this assistance is far greater than we originally anticipated, and we are very pleased to provide these awards.”

“As a long-time educator, I know that education is the key not only to individual prosperity but also to the success of the whole area,” Vaughn continued. “Many former DSLCC students have built rewarding and successful careers right here in the Alleghany Highlands. We see them every day—as owners/operators of successful businesses; as CEOs, Vice Presidents, and Managers of local banks; as high school/elementary school principals, teachers, and guidance counselors; as Human Resource Directors of major corporations; and as nurses in our hospitals. In short, people who have made and are continuing to make a positive difference in our community.”

In addition to a completed application form, successful applicants must fulfill the following requirements:

• Reside in College service area and be eligible for in-state tuition

• Be a current, full-time student at DSLCC

• Have completed one year of study (at least 24 credit hours) at DSLCC with a minimum GPA of 3.0

• Submit official DSLCC transcript

• Submit two letters of recommendation

• Submit a short essay on career goals

• Be a full-time student during the academic year the scholarship is in force. Each year, residents of the College’s service area—Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, and northern Botetourt Counties, and the cities of Buena Vista, Covington, and Lexington are invited to apply for a variety of scholarships through the Educational Foundation. Since it was established in 1980, the non-profit organization has awarded more than $850,000 in scholarships to area students.

In addition to the thousands of dollars awarded in student scholarships each year, the Foundation also provides support for College programs through the purchase of state-of-the-art equipment for classrooms and the awarding of faculty grants, which enables current, full time faculty members to broaden and enhance their expertise and curricula.

For a Lancaster Second-Year Scholarship application or for more information, contact Lynda Thompson by phone at 540/862-2837, by email at lthompson@dslcc.edu or on the web at www.dslcc.edu.
