Allegheny Highlands Woodworkers Guild To Host Woodturning Workshop April 10

 
MONTEREY, VA. (March 2, 2010) - The Allegheny Highlands Woodworkers Guild will sponsor a workshop featuring Barbara Dill of Richmond on Saturday, April 10th in Monterey. Dill is well known in lathe-turning circles throughout the region for her creativity and expert knowledge of woodturning.

During this workshop, Barbara will demonstrate her specialties - bowl and multi-axis turning - and also spindle turning for furniture makers who want to learn to turn table legs, bed posts, etc.

The workshop will take place at the Highland County School shop starting at 10 AM and finish mid-afternoon. The attendance fee is $50, which will include lunch. Dill began her woodturning career in 1990. During that first year she studied with David Ellsworth, Ray Key and Michael Hosalik and with several other turners since then. She has been active in the Richmond area by starting the cooperative gallery “but is it art” in 1991 and by being a founding member of “Woodworkers Anonymous” in the early 90’s. She has taught at the Visual Arts Center in Richmond since 1998.

In 2007, shehad two articles published in the “American Journal of Woodturning” on the subject of Multi-Axis Spindle Turning. She has been teaching multi-axis concepts at various club meetings and symposiums within the South East.

Dill works exclusively with local hardwoods that would otherwise be burned or discarded. Her work depends on the woods that she finds, making each piece unique. To see more on Barbara’s background and examples of her work, see her website at www.barbaradill.com

Founded in 2008, the AHWG of members at all levels of experience and knowledge regarding woodworking skills. The mission of the Guild is: “To improve the knowledge and skills of associate woodworkers, whether hobbyist of professional, and promote the sale of their products through co-operative marketing activities.” The Guild plans to sponsor one other workshop this fall, an exhibit and sale of members’ work in September and a juried show in the spring of 2011.
