DSLCC to Host Career Day on March 27

Dabney S. Lancaster Community College will host Career Day on Saturday, March 27, from 9:30 to 11:30 am on the campus in Clifton Forge. The focus will be on DSLCC’s programs of study, outstanding facilities, beautiful campus and quality instruction. Students and families will receive information on college and career planning. Faculty and staff will be on hand to explain the college admissions process, provide an overview of the college’s programs of study and guide students through the process of applying for financial aid. Campus tours will be available.

“There are many reasons to attend Career Day,” commented Dr. Richard Teaff, President of DSLCC. “We invite area students and their families to see all that the college has to offer. Our occupational and technical programs prepare for employment. Transfer programs allow students to complete the first two years of a bachelors degree at DSLCC at affordable tuition rates—less than half of those charged at Virginia’s public four-year colleges. Students then go on to continue their education at the institution of their choice; the result for most students is a savings of thousands of dollars.”

Advisors will be on hand to explain the transfer process through which DSLCC graduates can enter many four-year colleges and universities as juniors. Under agreements that the College has in place with over 35 institutions, admission is guaranteed to eligible DSLCC graduates at many of Virginia’s top colleges, including Radford University, James Madison University, Roanoke College, Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia.

Highlights of Career Day include information about selected career fields, including Administration of Justice, Business, Culinary Arts/Hospitality, Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Education, Forensic Science, Forest Management Technology, Information Systems Technology, Manufacturing/Engineering Technologies, Massage Therapy, Nursing (CNA, LPN and RN), and Welding Technology. Also, a representative will be on hand to explain the College’s new Wind Turbine Service Technology program that will train technicians to maintain, service and troubleshoot wind turbines—skills that will be growing in demand as the number of green jobs continues to expand.

Complementing information about DSLCC’s Culinary Arts program, a community activity will be held the same day on campus--the fifth annual Art of Chocolate Festival, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Moomaw Center. This fundraiser for the Alleghany Highlands Arts and Crafts Center will include a “Chocolate Challenge” with ribbons and prizes for the best recipes. Several cake walks, live music, and a spicy chocolate salsa dance are some of the events.
