The Lockhart Scholarship was established in 1989 by family and friends of Mark W. Lockhart to honor his commitment to the nursing profession and to helping his fellow man. The Chucker Scholarship honors the memory of Dr. George Chucker and his wife, Edith Raab-Chucker, long-time residents of Clifton Forge. A beloved physician in the Alleghany Highlands Community for many years, Dr. Chucker cherished his service on the DSLCC Educational Foundation Board and served the board as President for several years. Mrs. Chucker began her career as a nurse and continued her education to become a certified nurse anesthetist. She established a school for nurse anesthetists at the former C&O and Alleghany Memorial Hospitals and became a certified examiner for the National Board Nurse Anesthetist Exam. Mrs. Chucker lent her expertise and support to many local organizations and causes.

Holestin, who will begin studies this fall at DSLCC in the Advanced Healthcare/Nursing program, says that she always has wanted to work in the nursing field. In addition to her studies at AHS, Holestin was a student in the Healthcare Assistant program at Jackson River Technical Center for three years and received her licensure as a Certified Nursing Assistant this spring. Her teachers described her as compassionate and patient with a caring attitude and willingness to learn.

Holstein was a member of the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) for two years, through which she volunteered for several community service organizations such as the Alleghany Highlands Christmas Mother program and the Angel Tree project. She is employed as a waitress/hostess for Pizza Hut.

The DSLCC Educational Foundation was established in 1980 to foster support for Dabney S. Lancaster Community College in the College’s service area and beyond. It strives to enhance community awareness; promote goodwill in the community by building relationships with individuals, businesses, and organizations; secure private contributions, bequests, and donations; and account for, manage, and appreciate monies or property donated to the Foundation.

Each year, individuals from Alleghany, Bath, northern Botetourt and Rockbridge Counties and the cities of Buena Vista, Covington, and Lexington are invited to apply for scholarships. In addition to the thousands of dollars in yearly scholarship awards, the Foundation also supports DSLCC through the purchase of technological classroom equipment and other materials and through the awarding of faculty grants.
