Boys’ Home Participates in 19th Annual H’Olympics

The Boys’ Home H’Olympics team and accompanying staff spent June 14- June 18 at Ramapo College in Mahwah, New Jersey to compete in the 2010 edition of the H’Olympics. Those who participated on the Boys’ home team were selected based on citizenship. Team members were Trey Halterman, Jakyus Goosby, Jamar Davis, Milliyon Fesseha, Lamont Freeman, Daniel Guangul, Mark Tembo, and Daniel Sekiwala. Staff accompanying them was Robin and Donnie Costigan, houseparents, Carl Blacke, campus manager and Dennis Fitzgerald, activities director.

The team members did a great job of representing themselves and Boys’ Home in the midst of competition. Lamont Freeman won a bronze medal in the shotput, Jamar Davis earned a silver medal in the high jump, Milliyon Fesseha and Jakyus Goosby competed with Kurn Hattin (a Vermont based group home) and won a gold medal in junior division softball. To cap it off the competitive week, the Boys’ Home basketball team won the gold medal.

The H’Olympics started out in 1991 as a basketball tournament for group homes in Pennsylvania, but has now evolved into the national event. The National Fellowship of Child Care Executives view this event as an opportunity for youth in group homes to compete with their peers for four day in basketball, volleyball, track & field, and swimming with the emphasis on teamwork, citizenship and sportsmanship.
