| Clifton Forge, VA (July 12, 2010) - Jordan Thomas Brogan of Clifton Forge has been named the recipient of the NTELOS Communications Scholarship by the Dabney S. Lancaster Community College Educational Foundation. Brogan graduated in June from James River High School and is enrolled in DSLCC’s Education Transfer Program. He is the nephew of Dwayne and Martha Broughman.
The CFW Communications Foundation was established in 1990 and was organized exclusively for charitable purposes including the promotion of health, education, and general welfare of residents of the areas served by the CFW Communications Company and its affiliates--CFW Telephone Company, CFW Cellular, Inc., and CFW Network, Inc.—and the establishment of grants and gifts in support of those goals. In 1991, the Foundation demonstrated its support of educational opportunities in the community by endowing the CFW Communications Scholarship for students who make DSLCC their college of choice.
Now the nTelos Communications Foundation, the non-profit organization continues to demonstrate its support of higher education for area residents by supporting the mission of the DSLCC Educational Foundation through the nTelos Communications Scholarship. Since the inaugural scholarship in 1991, the DSLCC Educational Foundation has awarded nTelos Communications Scholarships worth over $26,500 to 17 area students. Awards are made to academically gifted students from the nTelos service area who have been active participants in
school and community activities and plan not only to earn an associate degree at DSLCC, but also intend to transfer and earn a bachelors degree at a four-year college or university.
After completing studies for an Associates Degree at DSLCC, Brogan plans to transfer to Virginia Tech to pursue a Bachelors Degree in Forestry.
As evidenced by his 3.58 GPA, Matt was an excellent student at James River High School and graduated with 20 college credits through his participation in DSLCC’s Dual Enrollment program. His excellent academic record along with his outstanding character and service to his school and community led to his invitation to join the National Honor Society. His teachers agree that Jordan is an outstanding young man who makes the most of every situation. “Jordan is quiet and courteous, has a pleasant personality, and is a hard worker,” said one teacher. “He is a very deserving young man who always displays grace and courage.”
In addition to his academic pursuits, Brogan was involved in many extra-curricular activities at James River. He was a member of the Key Club and Varsity Club for three years and served as Captain of the Junior Varsity Football team as a freshman and of the Junior Varsity Basketball Team as a sophomore. Brogan also was a member of the Knights’ Varsity Football Team for three years. A member of the Varsity Basketball Team his junior and senior years, Brogan had the privilege of being on the winning state basketball championship team this past year and was presented with the Unsung Hero Award.
Brogan supports his community by giving of his time to volunteer with community organizations and activities such as the CROP Walk and Ronald McDonald House. he also has served his church as a volunteer for Vacation Bible School.
The DSLCC Educational Foundation strives to help unleash the potential of students who are preparing for fulfilling careers and bright futures by awarding thousands of dollars in
scholarships each year to local residents. After graduation from DSLCC, many students remain in the local service area and build successful and rewarding careers.
Each year, individuals from Alleghany, Bath, northern Botetourt and Rockbridge Counties and the cities of Buena Vista, Covington, and Lexington are invited to apply for scholarships. In addition to the thousands of dollars in yearly scholarship awards, the
Foundation also supports DSLCC through the purchase of technological equipment and other materials and through grants to full time faculty members.
