| Campers to Build Hovercraft at DSLCC Engineering Camp
|
| A “Summer Engineering Camp” for students entering the 8th or 9th grade will be held on the Dabney S. Lancaster Community College campus in Clifton Forge August 9-13. The camp, sponsored by MeadWestvaco, will be taught by Dr. Leo Mulcahy and Steve Weedling, who are both on the faculty at DSLCC in the Advanced Manufacturing & Packaging Technology program.
Campers will design, build and test a hovercraft, a vehicle that rides on a cushion of air instead of wheels or tracks. Campers will explore some of the principles that make a hovercraft possible, including velocity and acceleration; Newton’s laws of motion; pressure and lift; buoyancy, torque, work and power; momentum; kinetic and potential energy; and fluid dynamics. There will also be team competitions.
“The benefits of attending this camp are numerous”, commented Mulcahy. “Students can see scientific principles applied to real-world practices. They will gain a basic understanding of some key concepts that will prove useful to them in upcoming high school and college courses. Finally, they can have the opportunity to explore career fields that are related to the camp activities; they may become interested in science, advanced manufacturing, or engineering technology and decide to major in one of these areas. Limitless employment options exist in current and emerging fields for individuals having this knowledge and skill sets. The camp is designed to offer an interesting and fun learning experience.
Camp will be held daily from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Advanced Manufacturing Lab in Scott Hall; campers should bring a bag lunch. The registration fee is $20.
To register or for more information, contact Mulcahy at (540) 863-2825 or (540) 968-2257 or email lmulcahy@dslcc.edu, or Weedling at (540) 863-2870 or (540) 915-2045 or email sweedling@dslcc.edu. | | | | | |
