Morris Hill Campground Closes Early To Improve Water Tank

Covington, Va. – The Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, will close Morris Hill Campground, located in Alleghany County, on September 7 for the season. The campground will close earlier than usual to reline the drinking water holding tank; the campground will re-open in the spring of 2011. The campground must be closed as no drinking water, bathroom facilities or showers will be available while repairs are made. The 30-year old tank needs a new lining to ensure safe drinking water for the public. The special lining material cannot be exposed to weather colder than 50º F during curing so work must be done before winter. “To minimize the inconvenience to the public, the repairs will begin after Labor Day when the campground has less visitors” stated District Ranger Pat Sheridan. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will complete the needed repairs.

Reservations for single or group campsites at Morris Hill will not be available through the national reservation system beginning September 7, 2010. Reservations for the Group campsites can be made by calling the James River District office at 540-962-2214. Vault toilets will be the only facilities available; no water or flush toilets will be in service. Questions can also be directed to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at 540-962-3811.
