DSLCC Scholarships Awarded to Alissa Morgan

Clifton Forge, VA (July 5, 2011) - The Dabney S. Lancaster Community College Educational Foundation has awarded a Ferguson-Proffit Nursing Scholarship and the George N. Chucker and Edith Raab-Chucker Scholarship to Alissa Marie Morgan of Covington. She is a daughter of Timothy and Tracy Morgan.

The scholarships will assist with tuition and book expenses at DSLCC for one year and are part of the nearly $100,000 the non-profit foundation has awarded in scholarships for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Morgan is a June graduate of Alleghany High School and Jackson River Technical Center. Enrolled in DSLCC’s Advanced Healthcare/Pre-Nursing program, her goal is to complete requirements for both Bachelors and Masters Degrees in nursing.

An exceptional student at AHS, Morgan was selected for membership in the school’s National Honor Society and BETA Club her junior year. Her 3.70 GPA included six credits in DSLCC’s Dual Enrollment program. Her former teachers praised her dedication to all facets of her school life as well as her outstanding character. “Alissa was as enthusiastic in her desire for learning as she was tenacious on the volleyball court, and I found her to be trustworthy and honest in all endeavors,” commented one.

As a member of Girl Scout Troop 570 for four years, Morgan completed the requirements for the Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting. Her Gold Award Project included tutoring elementary and middle school children in the summer school program at Edgemont Elementary School. This effort also involved research and the creation and completion of lesson plans and activities, along with evaluation.

In addition to her academic work, Morgan was active in extra-curricular activities at AHS and JRTC as well as the Mounties athletic program. She was a member of the Key Club for four years and a member of the Health Occupations Students of America for two years, serving as secretary and winning first place in the state in Creative Problem Solving for the latter. A member of the Varsity Girls Volleyball Team her junior year, Morgan played for the Varsity Girls Basketball Team her junior and senior years, for which she served as Captain and was named Best Defensive Player.

Morgan participated in Alleghany Regional Hospital’s Teen Volunteer for three summers and is a junior assistant at her church. Through her membership in Girl Scouts and the Key Club, she has contributed to her community through several service projects, many focusing on collecting and donating food to local pantries.

The Ferguson-Proffit Scholarship was established by Eagle Rock residents, Donna and Steven Vaughn, and their children in memory of Mrs. Vaughn’s mother and father, Eunice F. and Melvin F. Proffit. Mrs. Proffit was a registered nurse and a graduate of the former Lewis-Gale School of Nursing in Roanoke. Mr. Proffit, a graduate of Jefferson High School in Roanoke, was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U. S. Army’s 116th Infantry, 29th Division. He retired as a manager of Lowe’s and Company. The Proffits were long-time residents of Eagle Rock.

The Chucker Scholarship honors the memory of Dr. George Chucker and his wife, Edith Raab-Chucker, long-time residents of Clifton Forge. A beloved physician in the Alleghany Highlands Community for many years, Dr. Chucker cherished his service on the DSLCC Educational Foundation Board and served the board as President for several years. Mrs. Chucker began her career as a nurse and continued her education to become a certified

nurse anesthetist. She established a school for nurse anesthetists at the former C&O and Alleghany Memorial Hospitals and became a certified examiner for the National Board Nurse Anesthetist Exam. Mrs. Chucker lent her expertise and support to many local organizations and causes.

The DSLCC Educational Foundation is committed to helping area residents build brighter futures by removing barriers to education. Since 1980, through the generosity of its

donors, the non-profit Foundation has awarded more than $1 million in scholarships and grants to residents of the college’s service region who made DSLCC their college of choice.      The non-profit foundation also supports the college by purchasing industry-standard

equipment and training models for classrooms making it possible for students to train on equipment similar to or identical to equipment used in the workplace and by awarding grants

to faculty members, enabling them to enhance and broaden their expertise through educational experiences both here and abroad.
