| Walton Receives Wilson Cup Award

| Clifton Forge, November 28, 2011 — Brandon Wayne Walton of Covington has been awarded the William T. and Langhorne C. Wilson Cup for Scholarship, Character and Community Service by the Dabney S. Lancaster Community College Educational Foundation.
Established by Bill and Lang Wilson of Covington, the award was presented at a recent reception on the DSLCC campus. Mr. Wilson has practiced law in Alleghany and Bath Counties for over 40 years. As an undergraduate at Hampden-Sydney College in 1960, Mr. Wilson was the proud recipient of the Gammon Cup, an award that recognizes scholarship, character, and athletic success. Mr. Wilson has continued to treasure this award through the years, and it is in that spirit that he and Mrs. Wilson chose to establish a similar tradition at DSLCC. The Wilsons created the William T. and Langhorne C. Wilson Cup to honor and to recognize a DSLCC student who exhibits outstanding character, scholarship, and community service.
The student, nominated by the college faculty and voted on by a special committee, must have completed at least 30 credit hours, have a minimum 3.0 grade point average, and be involved in community service. Reflecting Mr. and Mrs. Wilson’s residence and Mr. Wilson’s area of law practice, preference is given to students from Alleghany and Bath Counties and the City of Covington. In addition to an engraved silver cup, the award also provides $1,000 to the recipient.
“My mother was a teacher and guidance counselor at Crewe and Nottoway High Schools for forty years”, explained Mr. Wilson. “Education was very important to her, as it is to Lang and me, and we thought that recognizing an exceptional student at DSLCC was a
good way to emphasize the value of a good education. We feel that Nikki is very deserving of this award.”
Majoring in Business Administration, Walton is an extremely capable young man who is able to successfully complete his challenging academic pursuits while still finding time to work. He has completed over 40 credit hours at DSLCC and has a nearly 3.4 GPA. Hard working and self motivated, he holds a part-time job and is active in community activities. In addition to volunteering for the Alleghany Humane Society and local food pantries, Walton serves as a Junior Deacon and Assistant Vacation Bible School Coordinator at his church. Perhaps most telling is the time he spent fulfilling the many hours of community service required to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout.
At DLSCC, Walton’s ability to maintain positive relationships with fellow students and faculty members, along with his strong work ethic and excellent communication skills, make him an outstanding role model for other DSLCC students. He serves as a tutor for Macroeconomics and is Vice President of the Student Senate. One faculty member remarked that Walton is “one of the most respectful and polite young men whom I have ever met.”
He is the son of Tim and Susan Walton.
In addition to the thousands of dollars awarded in student scholarships each year, the non-profit Educational Foundation also supports DLSCC through the purchase of technological equipment and other materials and through the awarding of faculty grants.
