| DSLCC Culinary Arts Program Receives Initial Accreditation
|
| Dabney S. Lancaster Community College has received a certificate of approval for initial accreditation of its culinary arts certificate and associate of applied science degree program by the American Culinary Federation (ACF), Inc., a professional organization for chefs and cooks. The Culinary Arts program is offered at the DSLCC Rockbridge Regional Center in Buena Vista.
ACF was established to promote the professionalism of American chefs. With more than 20,000 members, it is actively involved in educational programs, certifications, competitions, apprenticeships, regional and national events, and networking opportunities for those in the culinary industry. ACF’s approval of the initial accreditation of DSLCC’s program came after a thorough self-study and a site visit by an ACF team. Following program accreditation, the Rockbridge Regional Center Kitchen was certified for competition and ACF Chef Certification examinations. On Saturday, October 8th, the first authorized ACF Chef Certification event was held with six chefs’ seeking advanced credentials in various topics according to ACF criteria.
The Homestead, a KSL resort in Hot Springs, promotes the DSLCC culinary arts program as a convenient and affordable training option for those seeking an ACF-accredited program to prepare for employment. Since the College began offering culinary arts courses, The Homestead has welcomed job applications from graduates, In March, the Homestead is sponsoring the Second Annual Young Chef Challenge for several high school culinary arts classes, recognizing student skills and encouraging culinary arts as an outstanding career option.
Limited openings are available in culinary classes taught by program head Phil McManus for the Spring Semester. Prompt registration is encouraged.
In addition to classes at the RRC, DSLCC will offer an introductory hospitality course at The Homestead in Hot Springs on Wednesday evenings. All classes are open to the public. For more information, email edodrill@dslcc.edu. | | | | | |
