 | DSLCC Educational Foundation Board members Kathy Bryant, Richard Crowder, and H. C. Rhodes, and Foundation Director, Lynda Thompson, work out details of the new 50th Anniversary Alumni Scholarship being established by the foundation. The trio, all DSLCC graduates, hopes the many DSLCC alumni will join them on a journey back in time to their fond memories of days spent as a student on the Clifton Forge campus and will contribute to this scholarship effort so that students in the decades ahead will have the same quality, meaningful experience at DSLCC as they had as students. The non-profit foundation hopes to establish an annual alumni scholarship for graduates at each of the DSLCC service-area high schools; however doing so will require the help of the thousands of people who have joined the ranks of DSLCC alumni. Donations may be made online at www.dslcc.edu or may be mailed to DSLCC Educational Foundation, P. O. Box 1000, Clifton Forge, VA 24422. Clockwise from left: Rhodes, Thompson, Bryant and Crowder. | Educational Foundation to Create Alumni Scholarship
|
| Clifton Forge, January 17, 2012 - In honor of Dabney S. Lancaster Community College’s 50th anniversary, the DSLCC Educational Foundation announced this week the establishment of alumni scholarships for students from each of its service-area high schools—Alleghany, Bath County, Covington, James River, Parry McCluer, and Rockbridge County. Funding for these scholarships will come from donations made by DSLCC alumni to a special 50th anniversary alumni scholarship fund.
“This is not only a time to reflect on our wonderful past, but also a time to look ahead to the future,” said Educational Foundation President, Richard Crowder. “I am asking for the help of fellow alumni, so all students in the decades ahead will have the same quality, meaningful experience at DSLCC we had as students. Whether it’s five, fifty or five hundred dollars or beyond, everything counts, and with thousands of DSLCC graduates all helping out with this cause, we easily can reach our goal. It is our hope that we will be able to raise enough money to award many alumni scholarships in the years to come.”
Educational Foundation Director, Lynda Thompson, said the hope is to make the awarding of Alumni Scholarships an annual event, but added that creating the scholarships will require the help of the thousands of people who have joined the ranks of DSLCC alumni.
The Dabney S. Lancaster Community College Educational Foundation was established in 1980, with a mission of supporting the college through the awarding of scholarships to talented, deserving students, by providing industry-standard equipment to assist in training students for the workplace, and by awarding grants to enhance and broaden the expertise of faculty members through education experiences in this country and abroad.
The foundation has actively grown both its endowed and non-endowed funds over the years while, at the same time, increasing the number of scholarships awarded and the total dollar amount of awards. Since its founding, the foundation has awarded nearly $1million in scholarship awards.
On March 18, the college will observe the 50th anniversary of Founders Day, commemorating March 15, 1962—the day Virginia’s General Assembly created the institution that became Dabney S. Lancaster Community College—with a special celebration on the Clifton Forge campus.
Donations to the 50th Anniversary Alumni Scholarship Fund can be made online at www.dslcc.edu or can be mailed to DSLCC Educational Foundation, P. O. Box 1000, Clifton Forge, VA 24422. Gifts also will be gladly accepted at the 50th anniversary celebration on March 18.
