Scholarship Available for Town of Clifton Forge Employees

Clifton Forge, January 30, 2012— The Municipal Employees Scholarship is available through the Dabney S. Lancaster Community College Educational Foundation for an employee of the Town of Clifton Forge who also is a resident of Alleghany County or the Town of Clifton Forge or for the dependents of said employees. The scholarship will assist with tuition expenses at DSLCC for the fall 2012 semester.

Clifton Forge resident, Dr. John Grimes, established the Scholarship in appreciation of the hard work and dedication of the men and women who work for the Town of Clifton Forge. Foundation President, Richard Crowder, says the Foundation is grateful to Dr. Grimes for creating this scholarship opportunity. “Scholarships like this play a critical role in area economic development efforts. In my experience as an HR Manager, I realized how important an educated workforce was to companies seeking to locate or relocate their business operations. The level of preparedness of the region’s workforce is even more important today as we seek to lure new businesses to our area. We are hopeful that other residents will follow Dr. Grimes’ lead and either contribute to this scholarship or establish similar scholarships,” concluded Crowder.

Interested applicants should note the following requirements: 1) Be an employee or dependent of an employee of the Town of Clifton Forge; 2) Be a resident of Alleghany County or the Town of Clifton Forge; 3) Possess a high school diploma or GED Certificate; 4) Be enrolled in at least one class at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College during the semester the scholarship is in force.

Scholarship applications are available in the Educational Foundation Office in Backels Hall, in the Clifton Forge Town Manager’s Office, or online at www.dslcc.edu. Application deadline is Monday, June 2, 2012.

Since 1980, through the generosity of its donors, the Educational Foundation has awarded nearly $1 million in scholarships and grants to residents of the DSLCC service region. These scholarships are not only for newly graduated high school students, but also for the non-traditional student who chose not to pursue a post-secondary education immediately after high school graduation but now wishes to enroll in DSLCC to gain marketable job skills, facilitate their career advancement, or successfully change career paths. The Educational Foundation also awards scholarships to students who have completed at least one year of study at DSLCC and are returning to complete studies either for an associates degree or a program leading to employment.

In addition to awarding student scholarships, the non-profit foundation also supports the college by purchasing industry-standard equipment and training models for classrooms making it possible for students to train on equipment similar to or identical to equipment used in the workplace and by awarding grants to faculty members, enabling them to enhance and broaden their expertise through educational experiences both here and abroad.
