The Boys' Home Community Steps Up

The annual Residential Education Day event will be held Friday, May 3 on the Boys’ Home campus. The event lasts from 11 a.m. -2 p.m. The theme of this year’s celebration is, “This is A Story about a Boy.” This year’s event will include campus tours, tours of the Boys’ Home school, a special luncheon and storytelling.

Leading up to Residential Education Day, a challenge was set up for the residents and staff of Boys’ Home. Those two challenges that began February 18 consisted of a reading challenge with the goal to complete 400 books and a second challenge to log in 2,000 miles by walking, running, biking or swimming. In the first few weeks of these challenges, participation was decent, but not where everyone expected it to be. Halfway through, it looked like both goals were not going to be met as the numbers was around 150 Books and around 900 miles. After making a plea with the supporters of Boys’ Home and those within the community, everyone stepped up and helped reach the goals of 400 books and 2,000 miles. Officially, 491 books have been read collectively and 2,439.32 miles have been logged collectively. A final number will be announced later as books and miles are still coming in.

Located in Covington, Virginia, Boys’ Home, Inc. focuses on helping young men, ages 6-17, who have promise, but limited opportunities. Boys’ Home has been an integral part of the Alleghany Highlands since 1906.
