Dabney S. Lancaster Community College’s forestry team placed fourth overall in the 13th annual Mid-Atlantic Woodsman’s Meet hosted on the DSLCC Clifton Forge campus Saturday, April 5. The day-long event featured a variety of competitions using woodsman’s tools including axes, chainsaws and crosscut saws.

A large and enthusiastic crowd cheered on the five college teams who competed. The overall winner was Penn State at Mont Alto; Haywood Community College in Clyde, NC, placed second; Allegany College of Maryland in Cumberland was third; and Montgomery Community College in Troy, NC was fifth. The event also served as a qualifier for the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS collegiate competitions.

“This was a great opportunity for our college,” said DSLCC Forest Technology Program Head Brian Keiling. “The event was a huge success and allowed us to have a day filled with friendly competitions, all while showcasing the forest management technology program.”

DSLCC students took first place in three events: Danielle Reynolds in the bolt split; John Paul Ewan and Patrick Pentecost in the pole fell; and Pentecost and Lucas Barber in the men’s crosscut sawing competition.

The DSLCC team was second place in three events: Barber in dendrology; T.J. Deisher in the distance pulp toss; and Reynolds and Molly Nicely in the women’s crosscut sawing.

Ewan and Jake Ramsey took third place in the men’s crosscut; Nicely and Pentecost were third in the crosscut sawing that featured both men and women. DSLCC also placed third in the pulp toss accuracy contest, which included Waylon Maydian, Deisher, Ashby Taylor, Jacob Fairburn, Nicely and Ewan.
