DSLCC Educational Foundation Announces Four New Scholarships

Clifton Forge, July 8, 2014— The DSLCC Educational Foundation recently announced four new scholarships, all established by donors from the College’s service area during the 2013-2014 academic year. Two of the four scholarships were awarded for the first time this spring – part of the more than $100,000 that was awarded to DSLCC students in the service area for the 2014-2015 academic year. According to Ward Robens, President of the DSLCC Educational Foundation Board of Directors, “We continue to be impressed by the level of support in our community, as we work toward educational attainment for all in our service area. These four new scholarships are a testament to this dedicated effort.” Robens continued, “We are so thankful for the generosity of our donors, who make the work of the Educational Foundation possible.”

The George R. Goode Memorial Scholarship was established by Dr. John Grimes of Clifton Forge in honor of Mr. Goode, just before his passing in June. A native of Clifton Forge, Mr. Goode – a groundbreaking community leader – spent the majority of his life in the area. He worked for the railroad for 36 years and raised 8 children in Clifton Forge. He served in various roles in the community, including Chairman of the Deacon Board at Main Street Baptist in Clifton Forge for 25 years, First Citizens Bank Advisory Board member, member of the Alleghany Highlands Consolidation Committee from 2010-2011, and Masonic Theatre Board member. In addition, he was a key leader in the desegregation of Clifton Forge public schools in 1966. The integration of Jefferson and Clifton Forge High Schools formed the first fully integrated school in Virginia. Perhaps his most notable achievement was being elected the first African-American Mayor of Clifton Forge, from 1976-1986. To honor a lifetime of achievements, the George R. Goode Memorial Scholarship will provide an annual scholarship to a deserving student, who meets the following criteria: is a descendant of alumni of Jefferson or Watson schools, demonstrates good moral character and good citizenship, serves as a mentor in some way in the school or community, and demonstrates a financial need. Preference is given to those living in the Alleghany Highlands. It will be awarded for the first time in spring 2015.

The Business and Professional Women’s Club established the BPW Lilly Albert Scholarship for Non-Traditional Students this spring. Nancy Tyree (President), Margaret Phillips (Vice President), and Mary Francis Mays-Davis (Parliamentarian) were instrumental in establishing this scholarship through the DSLCC Educational Foundation. The BPW Club values education and realizes the importance of continued learning; as such, this scholarship will be awarded annually to a Non-Traditional, female student (one who did not initially pursue a college education directly following high school and who graduated at least three years prior to the application period), who is at least 25 years of age and demonstrates financial need. Preference is given to students of Alleghany County or the City of Covington. The first scholarship was awarded this spring for the 2014-2015 academic year.

The Shelbia Jean Bayne Honorary Nursing Scholarship was established by Mr. T. Elwood Bayne, to honor his wife Shelbia Jean Bayne – a nurse of 35 years. Born in Monroe County, West Virginia, Mrs. Bayne took the train to Clifton Forge in 1958 to attend the Chesapeake & Ohio Hospital School of Nursing, where she graduated in 1961. During the course of her career as a nurse, she worked at C & O Hospital, which later became Emmett Memorial Hospital, for seven years as a medical surgical nurse, which involved total patient care. There, she established the Respiratory Therapy Department, with Dr. Charles Ballou as the Medical Advisor. Within the hospital, she also worked in the Social Services Department as the Liaison Nurse and Utilization Review Coordinator. After taking a few courses at DSLCC in conjunction with Mary Baldwin College, she then earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology and sociology from Mary Baldwin College. After obtaining her degree, she worked at the LewisGale Hospital in Salem in the alcohol and drug unit for two years. She later worked in nursing home administration at a facility in Ronceverte, West Virginia as an Assistant Administrator. Upon returning to Clifton Forge, she served as Director of Nursing and Assistant Administrator at Shenandoah Manor, working alongside the Administrator to reinvent the operation. Mr. Bayne established the scholarship based on his belief in honoring those who have worked for the benefit of others while they can enjoy and appreciate it. As an endowed scholarship, the Bayne Scholarship will be awarded for the first time for the 2016-2017 academic year to a second-year DSLCC nursing student, who resides in the service area and has earned a minimum GPA of 3.0

The Marvin F. and Marie H. Pursley Scholarship was established by Mr. Marvin Pursley in honor and in memory of Mrs. Pursley, a Bath County native who dedicated many years to educating Bath County students and appreciated students who worked diligently and continued their education after graduating from high school. Preference is given to graduating seniors from Bath County High School. The first Pursley scholarship was awarded this spring for the 2014-2015 academic year.

Established in 1980, the DSLCC Educational Foundation awards annual merit and need-based scholarships to students in the service area, which includes Alleghany, Bath, north Botetourt, and Rockbridge counties, as well as the cities of Covington, Buena Vista, and Lexington and the town of Clifton Forge. The Foundation has awarded over 100 scholarships, valued at over $100,000 for the 2014-2015 academic year. Applications for the following academic year will be accepted in spring 2015. If you are interested in supporting the Educational Foundation or a particular scholarship fund, please contact Rachael Thompson, Executive Director, at the Foundation Office at (540) 863-2837 or by email at rthompson@dslcc.edu.
