Dabney Awards 2014-2015 Academic Scholarships

Clifton Forge, July 15, 2014 — The Dabney S. Lancaster Community College Educational Foundation has awarded over 100 scholarships worth more than $100,000 for the 2014-2015 academic year. More than 20 scholarships were awarded to 11 Alleghany High School students. The following are several scholarship recipients who will attend DSLCC this fall.

Ms. Alison Ervine is the daughter of Timothy and Teresa Ervine of Covington. A graduate of Alleghany High School, Alison plans to study nursing at DSLCC and, ultimately, achieve her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. During her tenure at Alleghany High School, Alison was an A/B honor roll student, member of the AHS soccer team, Friends of Rachel officer, Key Club member, athletic training student aide, and a member of the Leadership class. In her community, Alison has been a Vacation Bible School instructor for 3 years and has volunteered with the Christmas Mother program for 2 years.

Alison is the recipient of three scholarships for the 2014-2015 academic year, including the Ferguson/Proffit Nursing Scholarship, the Mark W. Lockhart Memorial Scholarship, and the First National Bank Scholarship.

The Ferguson/Proffit Nursing Scholarship was given in honor and memory of Eunice F. and Melvin F. Proffit by daughter and son-in-law, Donna & Stephen Vaughn, and their grandchildren. Mrs. Proffit was a registered nurse and graduate of the former Lewis-Gale School of Nursing in Roanoke. Mr. Proffitt was a graduate of Jefferson High School in Roanoke and a veteran of World War II, serving in the U. S. Army’s 116th Infantry, 29th Division.

The Mark W. Lockhart Memorial Scholarship was established by friends and family in memory of Mark Lockhart, son of Billy and Bonnie Lockhart. A graduate of AHS and a cum laude graduate of the DSLCC transfer program, Mark received his BSN from the University of Virginia. He worked as an RN at the UVA Hospital and volunteered as an emergency medical technician with the Palmyra Rescue Squad. Mark was killed when the ambulance in which he was administering first aid collided with another vehicle. The scholarship was established to honor Mark and to serve as a reminder of the dangers encountered by volunteers working for the betterment of the community.

The First National Bank Scholarship was established to assist students from the bank’s service area who wish to pursue post-secondary education at DSLCC. Preference is given to graduating high school seniors from the bank’s service area who have a 3.0 GPA.

Mr. Bradley Armstrong is the son of Eric and Sara Armstrong of Clifton Forge. A graduate of Alleghany High School, Bradley will attend DSLCC in the fall and plans to transfer next school year to the electrical instrumentation program at New River Community College. During his time at AHS, Bradley was a member of FFA, the AHS swim team, Outdoors Club, Foreign Language Club, the emergency crew, and the JV football team his freshman year. He attended forestry camp and was also nominated to attend Boy’s State at Radford University. In his community, he volunteers his time for the Sharon Volunteer Fire Department, is a member of Lone Star Advent Christian Church and youth program, and works at Kroger.

Bradley is the recipient of two scholarships for the 2014-2015 academic year, including the Christopher Baker Memorial Scholarship and the Colin Ferguson Honorary Scholarship. The Christopher Baker Memorial Scholarship was established by Rodney and Doris Withrow Baker through contributions from family and friends after Christopher died from injuries related to an automobile accident on January 9, 2013.  Christopher played soccer for and was a graduate of AHS, and was an Eagle Scout. He attended DSLCC for two years.

The Colin Ferguson Honorary Scholarship was established by Dr. John Grimes, a Clifton Forge native, to honor Mr. Ferguson, a former teacher and coach, for his guidance and commitment to young people and the importance of education. After teaching and coaching in the Clifton Forge School System for five years, Mr. Ferguson was a Professor of History at DSLCC for about fifteen years. The recipient must be a resident of Clifton Forge.

Ms. Samantha Spraker is the daughter of Timothy and Sharon Spraker of Covington. As a graduate of Alleghany High School, Samantha will attend DSLCC in the fall and plans to transfer after two years to pursue a degree in education at Radford. While a student at AHS, Samantha was a member of the JV cheerleading squad as the Spirit Captain, the JV soccer team, and the Varsity soccer team. She also took dance at Patsy’s Dance Studio and worked as a hostess and waitress at Cucci’s Pizzeria, where she will continue working while in school.

Samantha was awarded two scholarships for the 2014-2015 academic year: the MeadWestvaco Scholarship and the Central High School Lucy Gleason Scholarship.

The MeadWestvaco Scholarship was established for a graduating senior from a high school in the DSLCC service area or a second-year DSLCC student who plans to transfer to pursue a degree in engineering, computer science, information technology, or the biological sciences. The student also must demonstrate leadership potential as exhibited by involvement in extracurricular activities. Preference is given to family members of MWV employees.

The Central High School Lucy Gleason Scholarship was established in honor of Miss Gleason, a graduate of Clifton Forge High School. Miss Gleason taught for 46 years in the Alleghany School System—32 at Central School and 5 at Alleghany High School. Teaching was her life; donations to the scholarship fund have been made by family members, friends, and former students and classes who wish to honor the impact “Miss Lucy” had on their lives.

Ms. Chloe Bruce is the daughter of Michelle Browning and Donald Bruce of Covington. Having recently graduated from Alleghany High School, Chloe will attend DSLCC in the fall with the goal of studying nursing. After attaining the RN level, she plans to transfer to obtain her bachelor’s degree of nursing. While at AHS, Chloe was an active member of the Key Club and HOSA. In her community, Chloe studied dance at Patsy’s Dance Studio and also taught dance there for 5 years.

Chloe has received two scholarships for the 2014-2015 academic year, which are the Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Scholarship and the Ethel May Grimes Dorsey Scholarship.

The Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Scholarship was established by the Chamber in 2004 to assist with the education of a deserving Alleghany Highlands resident who has made DSLCC their college of choice. The scholarship alternates between Alleghany and Covington High Schools.

The Ethel May Grimes Dorsey Scholarship was established by family and friends in memory of Mrs. Dorsey, a dedicated, hardworking, and caring person who was devoted to the nursing profession. It is awarded to either a graduating senior or to a first or second-year nursing student, who is a resident of the DSLCC service region.
