Dabney Awards More 2014-2015 Academic Scholarships

 
Clifton Forge, July 15, 2014 — The Dabney S. Lancaster Community College Educational Foundation has awarded over 100 scholarships worth more than $100,000 for the 2014-2015 academic year. More than 20 scholarships were awarded to 11 Alleghany High School students, and 9 scholarships were awarded to 5 Covington High School students. The following are several scholarship recipients who will attend DSLCC this fall.

     Mr. Ryan Lockhart is the son of Lance and Jennifer Lockhart of Covington. Having recently graduated from Covington High School, Ryan will begin his collegiate career at DSLCC in the fall, with plans to transfer to a four year university and pursue a degree in English. He aspires to become a writer. During his time at CHS, Ryan was elected Homecoming King and also was selected to attend Boys’ State. In addition, he was Chaplain of MGA, Treasurer of FBLA, and a member of Students for Christ, Art Club and Spanish Club. He also participated in track and field and golf. In his community, Ryan volunteers for the Salvation Army Kettle Drive and Douthat State Park Cleanups, and he has worked at the Jackson River Garden Center and Covington Movies 3.

     Ryan has been awarded the DSLCC Honors Scholarship, which was established by the DSLCC Educational Foundation and provides a two-year scholarship to a graduating senior from the College’s service area. The Honors Scholarship is considered one of the highest level scholarships at DSLCC and is given annually to an exceptional student.

Mr. Elijah Weikel is the son of Tim and Cynthia Weikel of Clifton Forge. Having recently graduated from Alleghany High School, Elijah will begin his collegiate career at DSLCC in the fall, with the goal of earning his Associate’s Degree. He later plans to transfer to a four year institution to earn his Bachelor’s Degree. During his time at AHS, Elijah participated in the Greenbrier Valley Theatre, HOSA, and the Foreign Language Club. In his community, Elijah is a member of Kayser Memorial Presbyterian Church and works at Heirloom’s Café. He has also volunteered at the Clifton Forge Food Pantry.

Elijah has received the Marion and Cecil May Scholarship for the upcoming academic year. It was established by Marion and Cecil May of Clifton Forge, who bequeathed their estate to the DSLCC Educational Foundation for the purpose of providing scholarships to deserving students from the College’s service area.

 

Ms. Abigail Zamana is the daughter of Gary and Tammie Williams of Covington. Having recently graduated from Covington High School, Abigail will begin her academic career at DSLCC this fall to pursue an Associate’s Degree in general studies, with plans to transfer to Belmont University and study audio engineering. During her time at CHS, Abigail was an SCA Vice President and Section Leader in the Marching Band. She also participated in basketball, track, Spanish Club, and sound crew and provided assistance as an Athletic Trainer. In her community, Abigail assisted in sound crew for numerous community events and also volunteered in collecting admission at various sporting events.

Abigail is the recipient of the Merle Weaver Reid Scholarship, which was established by a bequest from Mrs. Reid’s estate and is awarded to graduating seniors from Alleghany or Covington High School. A native and long-time resident of the Alleghany Highlands, Mrs. Reid was involved in many local service-oriented organizations.

Mr. Nathaniel Jamison is the son of William and Joan Jamison of Covington. Having completed his homeschool studies, Nathaniel will attend DSLCC in the fall to pursue a general studies diploma, with plans to transfer to a four year university and obtain a Master’s degree. His areas of interest are geography, history, and political science. As a high school student, Nathaniel was a league champion in basketball, and he participated in baseball, the Alleghany Highlands Orchestra, bluegrass music opportunities, CBC Word of Life Teens, and CBC Drama activities. He has also been very involved in the Boy Scouts of America, having earned his Eagle Scout, served as a Senior Patrol Leader, and Assistant Scoutmaster. He has also volunteered for the Operation Christmas Child program, as well as the Snack-Pack program.

Nathaniel has been awarded the MGW Communications Scholarship, which was established in 1998 by L. Ronald and Bonnie Smith, on behalf of the MGW Communications, Inc. Board of Directors, to assist students from the College’s service area in attaining their educational goals.

The following two students have been awarded the Curtis A. Smith, 116 Infantry, VFW Post 1033 Scholarship and the Jesse A. Wright Memorial Scholarship. The Curtis A. Smith Scholarship was established by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, 116 Infantry, Post 1033, and is awarded each year to graduating seniors from AHS and CHS who have demonstrated academic aptitude.

The Jesse A. Wright Memorial Scholarship was established by Mr. Wright’s wife, Clara; his son and daughter-in-law, Calvin and Anne Wright; and by his nephew, Dr. Courtney Persinger, in memory of Mr. Wright, a native of Alleghany County, who grew up on Potts Creek and founded Covington Motor Company. Mr. Wright strongly believed in providing opportunities for young people, especially through education. It is awarded to graduating seniors from AHS and CHS.

Ms. Megan Jefferson is the daughter of Tammy Jefferson of Covington. A graduate of Covington High School, Megan will begin her career at DSLCC in the fall, with plans to transfer to a four year university and major in psychology. During her time at CHS, Megan was Captain of the track team, a member of the volleyball team and cheerleading squad, and an athletic trainer, certified in CPR. In her community, Megan was a youth league volleyball referee and worked at the Covington City Pool, Pizza Hut, and Covington Movies 3.

As noted above, Megan is the recipient of the Curtis A. Smith, 116 Infantry, VFW Post 1033 Scholarship and the Jesse A. Wright Memorial Scholarship. Megan is also the recipient of the Lancaster Scholarship, which was established by the DSLCC Educational Foundation in honor of Dr. Lancaster and is awarded to a deserving graduating senior from the College’s service area.

Mr. Nathaniel Arthur is the son of Bernie and Rachel Arthur of Covington. A graduate of Alleghany High School, Nathaniel will attend DSLCC in the fall to pursue welding and business management. While at AHS, Nathaniel was a senior mentor for welding at JRTC and a member of the Alleghany Outdoors Club; he also participated in the SkillsUSA welding competition. Nathaniel works at Food Lion.

As noted above, Nathaniel is the recipient of the Curtis A. Smith, 116 Infantry, VFW Post 1033 Scholarship and the Jesse A. Wright Memorial Scholarship. Nathaniel is also the recipient of the Carolyn B. Nettleton Scholarship for Business. A well-respected, long-time resident and Covington business woman, Miss Nettleton was a vital force in the Covington community for many years. The scholarships benefit a broad variety of students: newly graduated high school students, students continuing their career at DSLCC, and non-traditional students. Recipients are enrolled in business courses at the College and must be pursuing a degree or certificate. The scholarship is funded by the Nettleton Foundation.
