Dabney Awards 2014-2015 Academic Scholarships (more)

 
Clifton Forge, October 2, 2014 — The Dabney S. Lancaster Community College Educational Foundation has awarded over 100 scholarships worth more than $100,000 for the 2014-2015 academic year. More than 24 nursing scholarships were awarded to 13 students, who have been accepted into the DSLCC Nursing program. The following are second year nursing scholarship recipients, who will attend DSLCC this fall.

     Mrs. Jenna Rivenbark Barletta of Blue Ridge, is the daughter of Janis & Ray Rivenbark. A graduate of Lord Botetourt, she has also attended Appalachian Bible College. She is pursuing her degree as a Registered Nurse, with the ultimate goal of becoming a certified nurse midwife, as well as a nurse practitioner. While in high school, she participated in Key Club, Pep Club, Spanish Club, JV Softball, Tennis, and the National Honor Society. At Appalachian Bible College, she also made the President’s List and was a freshman student representative on the Student Council. She has volunteered for Straight Street, Teen MOPS, Choir, and as a Youth Worker. She has worked as a nanny, as well as at Things Remembered and as an Assistant Manager at FYE.

Mrs. Barletta is the recipient of the Elizabeth Cook Memorial Scholarship and the Martha Hudson Memorial Nursing Scholarship. The Elizabeth Cook Memorial Scholarship was established in 2003 by Mrs. Lillian Braun in honor of her sister, Elizabeth Cook of Covington. It is awarded annually to deserving students, either newly graduated high school students, continuing students at DSLCC, or non-traditional students enrolling at DSLCC.

     The Martha Hudson Memorial Nursing Scholarship was established by her son, Thomas Hudson, and the Covington Junior Woman’s Club. Martha Hudson was a dedicated, hardworking, and caring person who was always willing to help people. An important part of the Covington community, Mrs. Hudson was a dedicated nurse who, for many years, worked at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Covington. She was very active in Granbery Memorial United Methodist Church, the Covington Woman’s Club, and the Jackson River Garden Club.

     Ms. Janell Sowers of Troutville is a graduate of Lord Botetourt High School and also attended Meredith College. She is working toward her degree as a Registered Nurse, and ultimately aims to earn her Master’s degree in Nursing and work either in Neurology or Cardiac Care. In her community, she has volunteered with the League of Animal Protection.

     Ms. Sowers is the recipient of the Elizabeth Cook Memorial Scholarship (described above), the Raymond L. Claterbaugh, Sr. Memorial Scholarship, and the Tammy Caul Carter Scholarship. The Raymond L. Claterbaugh, Sr. Memorial Scholarship was established in 1999 by Dr. Raymond L. Claterbaugh, Jr. in memory of his father, a dedicated physician who practiced in the Alleghany Highlands for over 43 years. Dr. Claterbaugh’s enthusiasm for his work and devotion to those he served improved the quality of life for numerous individuals. The purpose of the scholarship is to enable dedicated individuals to pursue careers in the nursing and medical arts fields, and, by so doing, to make a difference in their communities.

     The Tammy Caul Carter Scholarship was established in 1988 by Bert, Betsy, and Chris Caul, Kim Carter, and friends in memory of Tammy Caul Carter who graduated from the DSLCC nursing program in June 1987. Listed in “Who’s Who, Among Community College Students,” she also received the Nursing Faculty Recognition Award and began her nursing career at Community Hospital in Roanoke. She and Kim Carter were married September 7. Tammy was killed in an automobile accident on December 7, 1987. The scholarship is intended for a DSLCC student who is pursuing a career in the nursing or medical arts fields.

     Ms. Mary Anne Sibold of Union, West Virginia is the daughter of Greg and Penny Sibold. A graduate of James Monroe High School, she has also attended New River Community College, Concord University, and the Jefferson College of Health Sciences. She seeks to obtain her degree as a Registered Nurse, ultimately working in obstetrics, pediatrics, or in the emergency room. Her activities in her free time include fishing, hunting, horseback riding, and working on her farm. Her work history includes the WV Department of Highways, Applebee’s, Monroe Health Center, and, most recently, Walmart Pharmacy.

Ms. Sibold has been awarded the Lois W. Morgan Nursing Scholarship, as well as the Elizabeth Cook Memorial Scholarship. The Lois W. Morgan Nursing Scholarship was established in 2008 by a gift from the estate of Mr. Lonnie H. Morgan, Jr. in memory of his late wife, Lois Wills Morgan, in honor of her many years of dedication and devotion to the nursing profession. Mrs. Morgan was a native of Clifton Forge, and she and her husband (originally from Ronceverte, WV) resided in Clifton Forge for many years.

Ms. Hannah Taylor of Clifton Forge is the daughter of Jerry and Debbie Taylor. A graduate of Alleghany High School, she is pursuing her degree as a Registered Nurse; her ultimate goal is to become a Nurse Practitioner. While at AHS, Ms. Taylor was Captain of the Varsity Cheerleading Squad, Homecoming Queen, a member of the leadership class her junior year, a member of the yearbook staff, and also participated in Pep Club, Key Club, Students for Christ, SADD Club, and Varsity Club. She also rode horses competitively. Ms. Taylor has conducted mentorships at Dr. Boyd’s and Dr. Goings’ offices, and she has worked at Alcova Mortgage as a loan officer assistant and at Mountain River Counseling as a Therapeutic Mentor. She currently works part-time at the Cat and Owl Steak and Seafood House, where she has been employed since March 2011.

Ms. Taylor is the recipient of the LewisGale Hospital - Alleghany Nursing Scholarship, which was established in 1999 as a nursing scholarship for DSLCC students. LewisGale Hospital - Alleghany is an accredited, full-service hospital serving the Greater Alleghany Highlands, West Virginia and Rockbridge County since 1979.

Ms. Taylor has also received the The Mae S. and Raymond E. Tucker Memorial Nursing Scholarship, which was established by family and friends after the death of Mae S. Tucker in September 1993. Mrs. Tucker was Director of Nursing at Liberty House Nursing Home in Clifton Forge. While in that position, she continued her education and was licensed by the Virginia State Board as a nursing home administrator. In 1988 she was appointed Administrator at Liberty House until her retirement in 1992. She was active in the nursing profession throughout her career. As a result of her great love and dedication to her profession, over the years she encouraged and supported many people to pursue nursing as a career.

Ms. Christy Hamilton of Glasgow is a graduate of Parry McCluer High School. She earned her CNA through the DSLCC program at Rockbridge County High School’s Floyd S. Kay Vocational Technical Center. She previously worked at Heritage Hall Nursing Home, but is now focusing on her Registered Nurse degree fulltime. Ultimately, she hopes to obtain her bachelor’s degree in nursing.

Ms. Hamilton is the recipient of the George N. Chucker & Edith R. Chucker Nursing Scholarship, which was established in December 1993 by family and friends in memory of George N. Chucker, a beloved physician in the Alleghany Highlands Community. Dr. Chucker was Chief of the Radiology Department at Alleghany Regional Hospital. Among his many community activities, he cherished his service on the DSLCC Educational Foundation, and served as its President for several years. Dr. Chucker was married to the late Edith Raab Chucker for 40 years; Mrs. Chucker passed away in December 2007. A certified nurse anesthetist, Mrs. Chucker was also a certified examiner for the National Board to test for the Nurse Anesthetist Exam and served as an expert witness in several court cases in her field. She was instrumental in the planning, fund raising, and building of the Clifton Forge Public Library. The Scholarship is intended to assist students pursuing a degree in nursing or in related medical arts fields.

Ms. Rebecca Persinger of Clifton Forge is the daughter of Michael & Karen Persinger. Having graduated from Alleghany High School, Rebecca is pursuing her degree as a Registered Nurse. Ultimately, her goal is to become a Nurse Practitioner. While at AHS, Rebecca participated in the Beta Club, the Yearbook Staff, the Expressions Club, the SADD Club, photography, and was a member of the Leadership Class. She has also earned multiple blue ribbons in horseback riding. In her community, she has volunteered for the Christmas Mother, and contributed to the Humane Society, the Salvation Army Angel Tree, and the Woodlands Nursing Home. She has worked at Kroger, The Homestead Resort, and at Camp Mont Shenandoah as equestrian staff.

     Ms. Persinger is the recipient of the Walter L. & Marie P. Johnson Memorial Scholarship and the Harry & Virginia Walton Memorial Scholarship. The Walter L. & Marie P. Johnson Memorial Scholarship was established in 1976 by Lydia Ellen J. Stagnaro in memory of her parents, Walter and Marie Johnson. The purpose of the scholarship is to provide financial assistance to worthy and promising students from the Clifton Forge – Alleghany County area who are enrolled in the DSLCC Nursing Program.

     The Harry & Virginia Walton Memorial Scholarship was established in 2007 by their five daughters – Jeanne W. Bradley, Carol W. Stafford, Mary A. Walton, Dawn W. Wilson, and Harriet Woodward – as a tribute to their parents' love of education and the Alleghany Highlands. This scholarship is awarded to a student enrolled in either the DSLCC nursing program or in one of the physical sciences. Renowned for his commitment to Alleghany County through his service on the Alleghany County board of Supervisors, School Board, the DSLCC Local Board, and the Fifth Planning District, Mr. Walton also was the recipient of the Medallion of Merit Award presented by DSLCC to local citizens who have made significant contributions to the betterment of life in a community served by the college. A nurse for many years, Mrs. Walton joined her husband in community service through her participation on the District Home Board and the Regional League of Older Americans.
