Dabney Awards 2014-2015 Academic Scholarships (part 3)

 
Clifton Forge, October 9, 2014 — The Dabney S. Lancaster Community College Educational Foundation has awarded over 100 scholarships worth more than $100,000 for the 2014-2015 academic year. Fifteen scholarships were awarded to 13 students, who are beginning their second year of study at DSLCC.

     This year, two continuing students are recipients of the Carolyn B. Nettleton Scholarship for Business, which was established in 2010 by a gift from the Nettleton Foundation. A well-respected, long-time resident and astute Covington business woman, Miss Nettleton was a vital force in the Covington community for many years. In Covington, she was the first woman to serve on a local bank board of directors. She graduated from Randolph-Macon Women’s College in Lynchburg and joined the American Red Cross and served in Korea until 1948, when she returned to Covington. She was Manager and Co-Owner of Nettleton Inc. The scholarships benefit a broad variety of students: newly graduated high school students, students continuing their career at DSLCC, and non-traditional students. Recipients are enrolled in business courses at the College and must be pursuing a degree or certificate. Mrs. Lisa Colwill and Ms. Christy Ford are the recipients of the scholarship for the 2014-2015 academic year.

     Mrs. Lisa Colwill of Selma is the wife of Mr. Rick Colwill and the mother of three children: Rachel, Joshua, and Sophia. While she currently is working to earn her Associate’s Degree in Business Administration, ultimately, she plans to obtain her Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting. She is a member of the Student Senate, in which she served as Treasurer last academic year, and is a member of Phi Theta Kappa honor society, in which she served as Vice President last academic year. She has been a work study for Ralph Sass, as well as a tutor for the A-Center.

     Ms. Christy A. Ford of Buena Vista is the mother of daughter Madison and son Uriah. She is pursuing her certificate in small business management, while working toward her Associate’s Degree in Business Management, as well as her Massage Therapy license. Ultimately, Ms. Ford hopes to open her own office in Buena Vista. She has worked for Americare Plus in Lexington as a Certified Nursing Aide, as well as for the Rockbridge Area Occupational Center in Buena Vista as a receptionist/ office aide. Currently, she works privately as a CNA in Lexington.

Six continuing education students are the recipients of the Elizabeth Cook Memorial Scholarship for the 2014-2015 academic year: Mr. Seth Belcher, Mr. Delano Jack, III, Ms. Anna Preston, Ms. Mikayla Shawnee Smith, Mr. Dylan Johnston, and Mr. Jacob McGuffin. The Elizabeth Cook Memorial Scholarship was established in 2003 by Mrs. Lillian Braun in honor of her sister, Elizabeth Cook of Covington. It is awarded annually to deserving students, either newly graduated high school students, continuing students at DSLCC, or non-traditional students enrolling at DSLCC.

Mr. Seth Belcher of Clifton Forge is the son of Dawn & Jerry Belcher. A graduate of Alleghany High School, he is working toward his Associate’s Degree in Information Technology. Ultimately, he hopes to own his own business. He currently works as a cashier at Hardee’s in Clifton Forge and is also a crew trainer.

Mr. Delano Lewis Jack, III (DJ) of Millboro is a graduate of Bath County High School. He is pursuing his Associate’s Degree of Science; his goal is to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree and to work for a professional race team in the future. Currently, he works at Turner Motorsport, where he has worked since 2011. Mr. Jack has been awarded the Elizabeth Cook Memorial Scholarship.

     Ms. Anna Preston of Clifton Forge is a graduate of Alleghany High School. Ms. Preston is pursuing her Associate’s Degree with plans to transfer to Roanoke College to earn her Bachelor’s Degree in Education. She hopes to become a guidance counselor in the future. She has worked at Douthat State Park in the Lakeview Restaurant as a waitress, as well as at the Quality Inn Hotel in Covington as a Front Desk Employee. She earned her NOCTI certification in Early Childhood Development from Jackson River Technical Center, and also served as President of the Expressions Club while at Alleghany High School. Ms. Preston has been awarded the Elizabeth Cook Memorial Scholarship.

     Ms. Mikayla Shawnee Smith of Clifton Forge is the daughter of Frank and Margaret Smith. She is pursuing her degree as a Registered Nurse at DSLCC. A graduate of Alleghany High School, Ms. Smith was involved in the Foreign Language Club and Expressions Club. She has also been a member of High Voltage Clogging Group, as well as a Candy Striper at LewisGale Hospital – Alleghany, a crew trainer at McDonald’s, and a volunteer at the Local 8-675 USW. Ms. Smith has been awarded the Elizabeth Cook Memorial Scholarship.

     Mr. Dylan Rivers Johnston of Lexington is the son of Jerry & Lisa Johnston. He is working toward his Associate’s Degree in Information Systems Technology with plans to work in the security field. He has volunteered for the Community Table, as well as for Fridays In the Park. He also works at Food Lion as a Cashier. Mr. Johnston is a recipient of the Elizabeth Cook Memorial Scholarship, as well as the GAMI Scholarship. The GAMI Scholarship – Greater American Management and Investment Scholarship – was established by the Educational Foundation to be awarded to a deserving DSLCC student each year who is pursuing a career in business.

     Mr. Jacob McGuffin of Rockbridge is the son of Clyde McGuffin. He is pursuing his Associate’s Degree in Administration of Justice and, ultimately, plans to become a police officer. He is a Master Mason, Order of DeMolay, and has volunteered for VACHIP and the Shriners Hospital. While in high school, he also participated in Tennis, Wrestling, Football, and was President of Student Council. He also has worked for Wendy’s. Mr. McGuffin is the recipient of the Elizabeth Cook Memorial Scholarship, as well as the FBI Foundation Scholarship.

     The FBI Foundation Scholarship was established in 2001by a contribution from Former Agents of the FBI Foundation for the purpose of assisting students in the Administration of Justice Program.

Ms. Kayla Elizabeth Johnson of Covington is the daughter of Mark and Patricia Johnson. Ms. Johnson is pursuing her Associate of Science Degree, in hopes of transferring to a four year institution to obtain her Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences. Kayla is a member of Phi Theta Kappa honor society and works part-time at Hardee’s, while going to school full-time. She frequently assists fellow students in the DSLCC library. Ms. Johnson is the recipient of the Frank and Charlotte Williamson Annual Scholarship.

The Frank and Charlotte Williamson Annual Scholarship was established by the Williamsons in recognition of the DSLCC Educational Foundation’s mission to “Build Lives…Build Futures…Build Hope” for area residents. Avid supporters of education, Mr. and Mrs. Williamson understand the importance of post-secondary education and its ability to change lives and communities. Mr. Williamson was a professor in the DSLCC Business department for more than 30 years.

For the 2014-2015 Academic Year, there are four recipients of the Bubbles, Bands, and Brunch Scholarship, which are: Sally Johnson, Alexander Lindsay, Kevin Tremblay, and Apryl Maria Turner. The Bubbles, Bands, and Brunch Scholarships are funded by proceeds from the bi-annual "Bubbles, Bands & Brunch" fundraisers and were established by the DSLCC Educational Foundation Board of Directors to assist students who have completed at least one full year at DSLCC and intend to continue studies at DSLCC as a full time student.

     Ms. Sally Johnson of Iron Gate is the daughter of Denise Pardue. Ms. Johnson is working toward her Associate of Science degree, with plans to become a pharmacist. She works as a state certified pharmacy technician at Wal-Mart pharmacy, in addition to going to school full time. Ms. Johnson is the recipient of a Bubbles, Bands, and Brunch Scholarship.

     Mr. Alexander Lindsay of Hot Springs is the son of David and Renea Lindsay. He is pursuing his Associate’s Degree in General Studies, while also working at Kenney’s Excavating. Mr. Lindsay is a member of Ashwood United Methodist Church. Mr. Lindsay has been awarded a Bubbles, Bands, and Brunch Scholarship.

     Mr. Kevin Tremblay of Covington is the son of Steven and Angela Tremblay. He is working toward his Associate’s Degree in General Studies, with plans to receive his Journeyman’s license at JRTC and, ultimately, become ordained with the Assemblies of God. Mr. Tremblay is a member of Phi Theta Kappa honor society and a worship leader at church. He formerly worked at McDonald’s and Dixie Gas and Oil. Currently, he ministers to nursing home residents and also works at Subway, where he has worked since 2013. Mr. Tremblay is the recipient of a Bubbles, Bands, and Brunch Scholarship.

     Ms. Apryl Maria Turner of Clifton Forge is the daughter of Larry and Tammy Turner. She is currently taking preparatory classes for DSLCC’s nursing program and hopes to enroll in the nursing program next academic year. Her ultimate goal is to become a neonatal nurse practitioner. She has been a private nanny since 2011 and also works at Douthat State Park as a waitress and office specialist. She also had the unique experience of visiting South Korea in Summer 2013, during which time she taught English and worked as a private nanny. She serves on the Missions Committee of Covington Bible Church.      Ms. Turner has been awarded the Bubbles, Bands, and Brunch Scholarship.
