Dabney Awards 2014-2015 Academic Scholarships For Non-Traditional Students

 
Clifton Forge, October 17, 2014 — The Dabney S. Lancaster Community College Educational Foundation has awarded over 100 scholarships worth more than $100,000 for the 2014-2015 academic year. Thirteen scholarships were awarded to 6 non-traditional students, who are studying at DSLCC this academic year.

     Ms. Hanna Short of Middlebrook is the daughter of Robert and Christine Short.

She is enrolled in the Administration of Justice program at DSLCC, more specifically Forensic Science. Her ultimate goal is to earn her Bachelor’s Degree and work in a crime lab, in addition to growing her own business. She currently owns her own business, marketing for local farms, as well as house cleaning and house sitting. She previously had her own goat dairy business. In the past, she has also worked at Buffalo Springs Herb Farm in Raphine, at the Andre Viette Farm and Nursery in Fishersville, and for the Washington and Lee University Archeology Laboratory in Lexington, where she continues to serve as a volunteer. She is the sitting President of the Upper James River Chapter of the Archeological Society of Virginia, based in Lexington. In this role, she also serves on the Executive Board of the Archeological Society of Virginia and was asked to serve on the Survey Committee of that Society by Mike Barber, State Archeologist. She has participated in numerous archeological digs with the US Forest Service Passport in Time program, the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, and the Archeological Society of Virginia. In 2009, she completed the Archeological Society of Virginia’s Technician Program and is a certified archeological technician in the Commonwealth of Virginia. In her community, she also serves as the recording secretary and participates in the hand bell choir at Providence Baptist Church in Harrisonburg.

     Ms. Short is the recipient of the First Citizens Bank Small Business/ Entrepreneurial Scholarship, the Linda Rose Memorial Scholarship, and the Elizabeth Cook Memorial Scholarship.

The First Citizens Bank Small Business/ Entrepreneurial Scholarship was established in 1999 by First Citizens Bank and Trust Company to provide tuition assistance to persons seeking training and/ or education in business.

The Linda Rose Memorial Scholarship was established by the DSLCC Classified Staff Standing Committee in memory of Linda Kenney Rose, a DSLCC employee whose untimely death occurred in 1995. Linda was an integral part of the DSLCC community. She willingly gave of her time, participating in all College functions, both job related and volunteer, as well as offering assistance and support to students. She did this while continuing to pursue her degree in Computer Information Systems. In recognition of Linda’s accomplishments and her concern for her co-workers, this scholarship was established for deserving students.

The Elizabeth Cook Memorial Scholarship was established in 2003 by Mrs. Lillian Braun in honor of her sister, Elizabeth Cook, of Covington. It is awarded annually to deserving students, either newly graduated high school students, continuing students at DSLCC, or non-traditional students enrolling at DSLCC.

Ms. AdriAnne Reyns of Covington is the daughter of Linda Reyns and Frank and April Reyns. A graduate of Alleghany High School and a previous graduate of DSLCC’s RN program, Ms. Reyns is currently attending Dabney to work toward her certificate in Massage Therapy. Ultimately, her career goal is to own her own massage therapy practice, in which she can help promote stress relief and good health, and to work with patients in a hospital setting, in which she will be able to provide her patients with a holistic approach to the healing process. She worked as an RN at Lewis Gale Hospital-Alleghany for five years as a med-surge and orthopedic nurse, unit charge nurse, and with DSLCC nursing students during clinicals. During this time, she served as the nursing representative for the hospital committee involving patient satisfaction. She was also a member of the American Holistic Nurse’s Association for two years. In her community, AdriAnne has served as a medical chaperone for the AHS student Marine Biology trip to St. John, US Virgin Islands. She has also been a member of McAllister Presbyterian Church in Covington, assisting with Vacation Bible School, church holiday activities, as a youth chaperone, and as a member of the church Relay for Life team. She currently works at Cucci’s Pizzeria, where she has worked since May 2004.

Ms. Reyns is the recipient of the Caperton Book Scholarship for Non-Traditional Students, the Vaughn Family Scholarship, and the Stuart D. Thomas Memorial Scholarship for Massage Therapy.

The Caperton Book Scholarship for Non-Traditional Students was established in 2007 by Bill and Nancy Caperton, who appreciate the College’s mission to enrich the lives of area residents.

The Vaughn Family Scholarship was created by Stephen and Donna Vaughn in memory of A.E. Vaughn, grandfather of Stephen Vaughn. A.E. Vaughn was an Eagle Rock resident and local business owner, who served on the Botetourt County School Board when Dabney S. Lancaster Community College was established. He was a proponent of affordable higher education for everyone.

The Stuart D. Thomas Memorial Scholarship for Massage Therapy was established in 2005 in memory of Stuart Dudley Thomas, Sr. of Covington and formerly of Daleville, Alabama, who died Thursday, April 7, 2005 after a short but difficult battle with leukemia. He was born March 12, 1954 in Fort Knox Kentucky. He relocated to Covington in 1995 where he worked as a licensed massage therapist until his death. He possessed a deep passion for helping people and was especially interested in the therapeutic side of massage therapy. To honor his work in this area, the Stuart Thomas Memorial Scholarship has been created.

Mrs. Susan Keith of Iron Gate is the mother of two daughters, Alexis and Morgan Keith. A graduate of Alleghany High School, Mrs. Keith is conducting her pre-requisite work to enter the DSLCC RN program in the near future. Currently, she works at Bath County High School as a Teacher’s Assistant in special education, where she has worked for the past 7 years. She previously worked as a medical transcriptionist for Jackson River Internists for 5 years. She has also worked as a CNA. In her community, she has volunteered for and coached recreational league basketball and volleyball in Allegany County from 2010 to 2013.

Mrs. Keith has been awarded the Business and Professional Women’s Lily Albert Scholarship for Non-Traditional Students and the Kay Reynolds Ray Memorial Scholarship.

The Business and Professional Women’s Lily Albert Scholarship for Non-Traditional Students was established in April 2014 by Margaret Phillips, Mary Francis Mays-Davis and Nancy Tyree as Business and Professional Women’s Club members who value education and realize the importance of continued learning. The scholarship was originally established by the BPW Club in memory of long-standing member Lilly Albert. It was awarded by the DSLCC Educational Foundation for the first time this academic year.

The Kay Reynolds Ray Memorial Scholarship was established in 2005 in memory of Kay Reynolds Ray to provide financial assistance for non-traditional students residing in the College’s service area. Kay was a life-long resident of Alleghany County and graduated from Alleghany County High School in 1972. She attended Dabney S. Lancaster Community College and transferred to the Jefferson College of Health Sciences where she graduated Magna Cum Laude in Occupational Therapy in 1998. Afterwards, she worked for Dr. Gary Pillow as an Occupational Therapist Assistant. At the time of her death, she was employed by the Covington School System as an Occupational Therapist Assistant at Edgemont Primary School. She was the wife of Leonard Ray and mother of Amy Ray, who also studied at DSLCC.

Ms. Brenda Wines of Glasgow is currently studying Business at DSLCC and plans to manage a small business. She has previously worked at Fancy Hill Restaurant and Phase 44 Restaurant. Most recently, she has worked for G-H Moore Ent., C.W. Barger and Son, Country Line Trucking, Werner Ent., and Carlisle Trucking as a driver. In her community, she is a member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church in Natural Bridge Station.

Ms. Wines is the recipient of the Young-Fitzgerald Scholarship for Non-Traditional Students and the Bubbles, Bands, and Brunch Scholarship.

The Young-Fitzgerald Scholarship for Non-Traditional Students was established in 2012 by Helen Jean Fitzgerald in honor of family members who valued education and realized the importance of continued learning.

The Bubbles, Bands, and Brunch Scholarships are funded by proceeds from the bi-annual "Bubbles, Bands & Brunch" fundraisers and were established by the DSLCC Educational Foundation Board of Directors to assist students who have completed at least one full year at DSLCC and intend to continue studies at DSLCC as a full time student.

     Mr. Scott Rowan of Eagle Rock is the father of Corey Scott Rowan. He previously worked in construction and currently is pursuing general studies. He is interested in studying welding as well. Mr. Rowan is the recipient of the Regional Literacy Scholarship and the Elizabeth Cook Memorial Scholarship, described above. The Regional Literacy Scholarship is funded each year by the Regional Literacy Coordinating Committee of the Valley Vocational Technical Center’s Adult Learning Center. The scholarship is intended for a GED recipient or a student who earned his or her high school diploma as an adult.

     Mr. Ronald Brackenridge of Clifton Forge is the husband of Bertha Brackenridge. He previously completed CNA courses at DSLCC and currently is studying welding. He is employed at Wal-Mart and Anderson Monuments. He also works at DSLCC as a work study. Mr. Brackenridge has been awarded the Elizabeth Cook Memorial Scholarship, established in 2003 by Mrs. Lillian Braun in honor of her sister, Elizabeth Cook, of Covington.
