DSLCC Educational Foundation Hosts Annual Donor Scholar Reception

Clifton Forge, December 2, 2014 – The DSLCC Educational Foundation hosted its annual Donor Scholar Reception on Friday, November 14th. The reception honored the many donors who make the more than 100 scholarships awarded annually a reality. It also served as a celebration of the academic excellence and achievement displayed by this year’s class of scholarship recipients. With approximately 240 guests in attendance, more than 60 students and 60 donors were honored.

The finale to the Donor Scholar Reception was the annual awarding of the Wilson Cup for Scholarship, Character & Community Service. The Wilson Cup was established in 2007 by Bill Wilson, Educational Foundation Board Member, and his wife Lang to be awarded annually to a continuing student at DSLCC who meets the following criteria: demonstrates outstanding character and scholarship, as well as a commitment to community service; is currently enrolled at DSLCC and has completed at least 30 credit hours at DSLCC; has a minimum 3.0 grade point average; is a resident of the College’s service area, with preference given to residents of Alleghany and Bath Counties, reflecting the Wilsons’ residence and Mr. Wilson’s area of law practice.

The 2014 Wilson Cup recipient is Mr. Anthony Charles Green. In addition to serving as the Vice President of the Student Senate at DSLCC, Anthony is a young veteran of the Army. He has over 100 hours of community service through the Presbyterian Missions Week program, in which individuals work side by side in community situations to improve individual lives through building projects and personal ministry for those in need.  He also volunteers for the Salvation Army, has participated in many community clean-ups, and took part in a humanitarian mission in the Dominican Republic while serving in the military.

As an academic, he maintains a high GPA and was named to the Vice President’s List in both the Fall and Spring semesters last year.  In addition, the professor who recommended him, Tondalaya VanLear, had this to say:

“This young man is in my American Literature course this semester, and his participation reflects his value of learning based on full consideration, critical thinking, and reflection.  He sees his education as a path to building a strong career as an Educator, and one dedicated to helping students explore knowledge, make keen discoveries, build understanding, and commit to positive action.” She continued, “He is an exceptional young man whose approach to learning, life, and individuals reveals a dedicated belief in bettering the lives of others through active participation.”

The DSLCC Educational Foundation warmly congratulates Anthony Green on this prestigious honor, as well as all of our scholarship recipients for the 2014-2015 academic year.
