Applications Being Accepted for Community Foundation for Rockbridge, Bath and Alleghany Nature Camp Scholarship

The Community Foundation of Rockbridge, Bath, and Alleghany (CFRBA) is pleased to announce that it is now taking applications for the Nature Camp Scholarship. The scholarship is for $400 and will cover part of the cost of attending a two week session of Nature Camp during the summer of 2015. The total cost of the camp is $815. The scholarship winner will be responsible for paying the balance of the fee, but additional financial aid may be available through the camp.

The Nature Camp Scholarship was created with the recognition of the positive value that an experience at a nature camp can have on a young person’s development, especially for individuals in lower-income or underrepresented communities.  This scholarship honors the memory of Eliot L. Balazs who lived his entire life in the Rockbridge area and was an ardent supporter of nature conservation, archeology, historic preservation, and outdoor activities.  Eliot donated countless hours to community organizations. He passed away in 2012, but this scholarship is a way to honor him and continue his legacy of service and conservation.

Nature Camp is a private, non-profit, residential, co-ed summer camp specializing in natural history and environmental science education. Since 1942 Nature Camp has sought to train a corps of interested, knowledgeable youth, from 5th through 12th grade, to conserve and protect the environment and to become wise stewards of the earth’s natural resources.

Nestled in an isolated, idyllic valley by Big Mary’s Creek in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Rockbridge County, Nature Camp is founded on the principle that no one can be expected to save the world who doesn’t care about the world, and no one can be expected to care about the natural world who doesn’t know about and understand it.

Nature Camp seeks to foster an appreciation for and love of nature by inviting the campers to explore the world around them through hands-on, outdoor, experiential learning. In so doing they hope to inspire the young people of today to become environmentally responsible and conscientious citizens of tomorrow, to spark a lifelong love of learning, and to forge a deep and abiding connection with the natural world.

For more information on the camp, visit www.naturecamp.net.

The deadline for applying is March 1st, 2015. NOTE: This is NOT a postmark deadline. Applications must be in the possession of the CFRBA by March 5th.
