DSLCC Scholarship Information Sessions Set at Area High Schools

Clifton Forge, March 4, 2015—A representative of the Dabney S. Lancaster Community College Educational Foundation recently visited area high schools to meet with students and discuss scholarship opportunities available to graduating seniors who make DSLCC their college of choice.

Since its incorporation in 1980, the Educational Foundation has awarded more than $1.4 million to students residing in the college’s service area. The scholarships are funded through contributions from individuals, businesses and organizations. “We are truly grateful for the generosity and support of our donors, who have made these scholarship opportunities possible for area students,” said Foundation Executive Director, Rachael Thompson. “Our donors have been and continue to be dedicated to advancing our mission of Building Futures, Building Lives, Building Hope,” Thompson continued. “They [donors] champion our pursuit of a quality education for all who desire to learn, and they recognize the critical role of education and work force training in facilitating economic growth in our area.”

According to Thompson, there are nearly 75 scholarships available for area students, some of them specifically for students from the Alleghany Highlands. Last year, the Foundation awarded scholarships worth more than $100,000. Although Foundation representatives have already visited area high schools, the office welcomes questions that students may have at any time.

DSLCC’s Guaranteed Admissions Agreements with about forty colleges and universities make it an ideal place to begin one’s pursuit of higher education. These agreements allow students enrolled at DSLCC to apply for guaranteed admission to some of the best colleges and universities in the nation and to enter the four-year institution with junior status. This opportunity is offered to DSLCC graduates who want to enter a bachelor’s degree program, have earned the required GPA, and have satisfied certain other requirements of the college to which the student is transferring.  Guaranteed Admissions Agreements allow the student to obtain a college education for half, or even less, of the cost of a similar program at a four-year institution. When you consider DSLCC’s first-rate faculty, small class size, and state-of-the art facilities, DSLCC simply is the best choice for many area students.

In order to be considered for a scholarship, all applicants must have applied for and been admitted to DSLCC and must have submitted a completed scholarship application by the April 15 deadline. Applicants also must meet individual scholarship requirements. Although most scholarships require a minimum 2.75 GPA, some scholarships do have a higher or lower GPA requirement. For information regarding individual scholarship requirements and other information, please go to the DSLCC Educational Foundation website at HYPERLINK "https://www.dslcc.edu/foundation" www.dslcc.edu/foundation and click on “scholarships.” Applications are available in each high school guidance office, in the DSLCC Educational Foundation Office in room 154 of Backels Hall on the main campus in Clifton Forge, and at the Rockbridge Center in Buena Vista. Applications also may be filled out online, then printed and hand delivered, or mailed to the Educational Foundation Office at 1000 Dabney Drive, Clifton Forge, VA. Deadline for applying is Wednesday, April 15. For more information, contact Foundation Director, Rachael Thompson by phone at (540) 863-2835.
