| Vision 2025 Corridor Curb Appeal Committee Sets Work Day for Spring Spruce Up
|
| Volunteers in both Covington and Clifton Forge are gearing up for a day of cleaning up and collecting litter on Saturday, April 25 from 8:00 until noon. The clean-up activities are the second of their kind with the first successfully taking place in April 2014. Piles of litter and debris were collected on the entrance corridors of both communities and many turned out to help in the effort. Spring Spruce Up on April 25 is in conjunction with Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce’s Alleghany Proud, Earth Day (which is April 22) and Tire Amnesty Day (April 18).
The Corridor Curb Appeal Committee and volunteers made a visual difference in 2014 with a series of work days to enhance the entrance corridors and selected homes on the corridors during events such as Spring Spruce up in April, Trimfest in July and September and Fall Fix Up in October. The schedule of events for 2015 includes Spring Spruce Up in April 25, Spring Splash on May 30 which will involve painting selected homes and the CSX Tunnels, and completing a painting project begun by students from St. Joseph’s University that was begun in March. The students began scraping and painting a home on A Street and Main in Clifton Forge. Volunteers in June hope to finish the project.
On April 25 in Clifton Forge, litter will be collected on Main Street and Ridgeway from Exit 24 to Exit 27, and on Verge Street and Keswick. In Covington, plans are to collect litter on the main corridors, paint the cinder block wall behind the high school that surrounds what is known as Burton Field. Door hangers will be used in both Covington and Clifton Forge to inform home owners of the services available.
The Corridor Curb Appeal Committee was recently recognized by receiving a $250 award from the Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce and Tourism for picking up the most trash in the community during the Fall Community Clean Up, and a photo of Corridor Curb Appeal volunteers appeared on the Home Page of the Keep Virginia Beautiful Website. In addition to cleaning and beautifying the entrance corridors of the community in 2015, plans are to request Town and City Councils to recognize several home owners who have renovated and enhanced their homes that are located in areas other than the main corridors.
