MeadWestvaco Announces Personnel Changes

 
COVINGTON, VIRGINIA – June 1, 2015 – MWV’s Covington mill announces position changes that were internally announced in the first quarter.

Jerry Brewster has accepted the position of area maintenance supervisor (AMS) for Fiberline and the Waste Treatment Plant. In this position, he is responsible for the overall maintenance, reliability, budget, and regulatory compliance of his departments, while ensuring adherence to safe work practices and guidelines. Brewster also oversees all the heavy equipment repairs within the mill.

Brewster graduated from Alleghany High School in 1989. He began his career with MWV in 1996 on the Extra Board and transferred to the Recovery department as a laborer/third assistant later that year. Brewster was accepted into the pipefitter apprenticeship program in 1999. He received accreditation as a journeyman pipefitter in 2003 and transferred to the Pipe Shop. In July 2011, Brewster was classified as a mastercraft journeyman pipefitter, and in January 2012, he accepted the position of maintenance planner in the Woodyard. In September 2012, Brewster was promoted to maintenance supervisor in the Woodyard.

Glen Hugus has accepted the position of senior safety specialist in the Safety department. In this position, Hugus is responsible for the safety support of the Carbon plant, Woodyard, Fuel Handling, Wood Procurement, and E&I departments.

Hugus is an Alleghany High School graduate. He became a certified EMT in 1982, an EMT-E in 2009, and an OSHA instructor in 2012. He began his career with MWV in September 1983 at the extruder plant in Covington. In 1984, he transferred to the Covington mill and worked in the General Utilities department until 1986 when he moved to the Carbon plant. Hugus has worked in a variety of departments including: the labor pool (1987), Store Room (1990), No. 1 Paper Machine (1992), No. 2 Paper Machine (1993), and Safety (2009). Most recently, he was wet-end assistant on No. 2 Paper Machine.

Bruce Jeffery has accepted the position of paper operations specialist on No. 2 Paper Machine. In this position, Jeffery is responsible for the optimization of No. 2 Paper Machine operations.

Jeffery received his M.S. in Pulp and Paper from State University of New York and began his career in 1983 at Boise Cascade in Beaver Falls, New York, as a process manager and foreman. In 1987, he accepted the position of quality manager at Monadnock Paper Mills in Bennington, New Hampshire, and in 1991, Jeffery joined Appleton Papers in Newton Falls, New York, where he held several roles including: quality manager, process manager, and machine superintendent. He became complex manager at Island Paper mill in 1998 before joining Domtar’s Johnsonburg mill in 2000 where he held the positions of foreman and process engineer. Most recently, Jeffery was a process engineer at Lydall Performance Materials in Rochester, New Hampshire, a position he accepted in 2010.

Jeremy Powell has accepted the position of quality assurance foreman in the Quality Assurance department. In this position, Powell serves as a fill-in QA foreman and No. 8 Paper Machine printer for half of the year and a special tester completing customer generated work orders during the other half of the year.

Powell graduated from Alleghany High School in 1997 and worked at Food Lion from 1997 - 2012. In 2001, he was promoted to manager and worked at various store locations including Lexington, Buena Vista, and Covington. Powell joined the QA department at the Covington mill in 2012 before moving to No. 8 Paper Machine in 2013 where he held the roles of utility assistant and fourth assistant.

Richard “Daryl” Bartley has accepted the position of woodyard maintenance supervisor. In this position, Bartley is responsible for the performance, reliability, and results of all equipment and corresponding maintenance and repair work in the Woodyard.

Bartley graduated from Alleghany High School in 1993 and Nashville Auto-Diesel College in 1994 with all honors including the Craftsman Award, Honor Seal, and perfect attendance. He joined Clemons Auto in 1994 before opening his own repair shop in 1995. In 1999, Bartley worked for Covington Motor Company, and in 2000, he began his career with MWV. He received his maintenance millwright card in 2005 and his maintenance pipefitters card in 2012.

Chris Brzak has accepted the position of Technical Sales Services representative for the Covington commercial print team. In this position, Brzak provides technical support to the mill’s Midwest customers using Tango products produced on No. 2 Paper Machine.

Brzak received his B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan State University in 2007 and earned his M.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 2009. He received his MBA in 2012 from Kettering University. During the summers of 2006 and 2007, Brzak interned at the City of Midland Geographic Information Systems in Midland, Michigan. In 2008, he interned at MWV’s Covington mill in the Power department and interned at Caterpillar in Peoria, Illinois. Brzak began his career at MWV as a process engineer in the Technical department in June 2009 and rotated through the Fiberline, Process Engineering, and Stock & Additives departments. In 2010, he joined the Quality Assurance department as a QA engineer, where he became an expert in paper machine vision systems.

Sean Edwards has accepted the position of assistant superintendent on No. 1 Paper Machine. In this position, Edwards is responsible for supporting wet-end operations on the machine.

Edwards earned his B.S. degrees in Pulp & Paper Technology and Chemical Engineering from North Carolina State University in December 2000. He began his career at Hercules Incorporated in 2000 as an account sales representative before accepting the position of pulp mill foreman in 2002 at Blue Ridge Paper Products. In 2005, Edwards joined Bowater as the power and recovery shift leader, and in 2006, he was hired as machine area manager at Rayonier Performance Fibers. Most recently, he held the position of pulp mill assistant superintendent (2012) at RockTenn’s containerboard facility in Fernandina Beach, Florida.

Matt Smoots has accepted the position of process engineer in the Bleach Room. In this position, Smoots is responsible for the Bleach Room PSM program as well as the ClO2 generator, bleaching units, chemical storage, and tank car unloading areas.

Smoots earned his B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from Virginia Tech in May 2014. He interned at the Covington mill in 2011, 2012, and 2013 and gained experience on No. 8 Paper Machine and the Biomass Boiler. In July 2014, he was hired full-time as a process engineer in the Technical department where he rotated through the Fiberline department.
