Registration Underway for New Sustainable Agriculture Program

 
Registration is underway for three new courses at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College, the first offerings in a Career Studies Certificate in Sustainable Agriculture. All classes will meet on the DSLCC Clifton Forge campus.

“Greenhouse Crop Production I “(HRT 121) is a 3-credit course that covers practices related to production of crops, including production requirements, environmental control and management, and cultural techniques. The class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 10:30 to 11:10 am in Room 509, McCarthy Hall.

The second course is “Introduction to Horticulture” (HRT 100), also a 3-credit course, which will emphasize career opportunities. Students will examine equipment, facilities, and physical arrangements of production, wholesale, and retail establishments. The class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 to 10:20, also in Room 509, McCarthy Hall.

“Topics in Food Production Safety” (HRT 195) is the third course and carries one credit. Topics will relate to the safe production of food and a review of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) set by the U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Students will also learn about the appropriate application of pesticides. Class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11:20 am to noon in Room 424, Warren Hall. HRT 195 meets for the first eight weeks and ends in October.
