AHS Students Receive DSLCC Scholarships

 
Clifton Forge, July 6, 2015— The Dabney S. Lancaster Community College Educational Foundation has awarded scholarships to local students who will begin their collegiate career at DLSCC this fall. The following are several Alleghany High School graduates who will attend DSLCC this fall:

Jonathan Ellis-Smith of Covington plans to complete his Associate’s Degree at DSLCC before transferring to Virginia Commonwealth University or Virginia Tech to study in a medical field or veterinary studies. In addition to his studies at Alleghany High School, Ellis-Smith attended the Jackson River Governor’s School and completed additional college courses at DSLCC giving him a total of 56 college credits. He also attend the Field Ecology Summer Regional Governor’s School at DSLCC in 2012. Extracurricular Activities at AHS included membership in the BETA Club, Key Club and Expressions Club. Ellis-Smith also participated in the school play, “Seussical—the Musical” as a member of the stage crew. Community activities include volunteering for the Alleghany Highlands Christmas Mother program, the Brian Center, the ConAgra Foods Program and the Alleghany Highlands Youth Soccer Association. He is a member of Calvary Christian Church.

     Ellis-Smith is the recipient of the DSLCC Educational Foundation Board of Directors Scholarship, which is funded by annual contributions from the volunteer board of directors to recognize exceptional high school graduates from the College’s service area who make DSLCC their college of choice and to encourage area students to increase their life opportunities by pursuing post-secondary education.

The following two students have been awarded Lancaster Scholarships, which are funded by proceeds from the Educational Foundation’s scholarship fundraiser, “Bubbles, Bands. & Brunch,” and assist with tuition and book expenses for deserving students from the College’s service area.

Summer Martin of Covington plans to earn an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Nursing from DSLCC and to become a Registered Nurse. Her goal is to work in a clinical setting with neonatal patients then become certified as a neonatal nurse. As a student at AHS, Martin was a member of the Family Careers and Community Leaders of America, serving the organization as Vice-President her senior year. She also participated in an internship program at Mountain View Elementary School. In addition to certifications in CPR and First Aid, Martin also is certified as a Child Abuse and Neglect Mandated Reporter. She is a member of the Temple Baptist Church youth group and is employed by Subway.

Katie Boggs will pursue her dream of becoming an art professor. Boggs, of Covington, will complete requirements at DLSCC for an Associate of Arts and Sciences Degree in General Studies before transferring to a four-year college or university to complete Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Fine Arts. Her goal is to teach art at the university level. Her extracurricular activities at AHS included membership in the BETA Club, the Foreign Language Club and the FCCLA. She is CPR and First Aid certified and worked as a Nap Aide for the Jackson River Technical Center Early Childhood Education program. Boggs’ has given back to her community through her volunteer efforts with the DSLCC EMT Moulage Simulation and the Clifton Forge Arts and Crafts Center Con of the Mountains.

As noted above, Boggs is the recipient of a Lancaster Scholarship. She also is the recipient of a Jesse A. Wright Memorial Scholarship and the Central High School Lucy Gleason Scholarship. The Jesse A. Wright Scholarship was established by Mr. Wright’s wife, Clara; his son and daughter-in-law, Calvin and Anne Wright; and by his nephew, Dr. Courtney Persinger, in memory of Mr. Wright, a native of Alleghany County, who grew up on Potts Creek and founded Covington Motor Company. Mr. Wright strongly believed in providing opportunities for young people, especially through education. It is awarded to graduating seniors from AHS and CHS.

The Central High School Lucy Gleason Scholarship was established in honor of Miss Gleason, a graduate of Clifton Forge High School. Miss Gleason taught for 46 years in the Alleghany School System—32 at Central School and 5 at Alleghany High School. Teaching was her life; donations to the scholarship fund have been made by family members, friends, and former students and classes who wish to honor the impact “Miss Lucy” had on their lives.

Brent Graham’s career goals include earning an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Information Systems Technology from DSLCC before transferring to James Madison University to complete a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Information Systems and Business Analytics. While a student at AHS, he completed 26 college credits through his participation in DSLCC’s Dual Enrollment Program. A member of the Future Business Leaders of America, Graham, of Covington, served the organization as Reporter. Graham is a member of Good News Christian Fellowship and is employed by Cucci’s Pizzeria.

Graham received the Lumos Networks Foundation Scholarship, which provides tuition assistance to a graduating senior from the company’s service area. The student must have exhibited leadership skills through a significant involvement in school and/ or community activities and must be planning to enroll as a full-time student at DSLCC.

Brianna Vest of Clifton Forge is the recipient of a Curtis A. Smith, 116 Infantry, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 1033 Scholarship, which is awarded each year to graduating seniors from AHS and CHS who have demonstrated need and academic aptitude. Brianna aspires to enter the medical field in pediatrics. She will begin her postsecondary career at DSLCC with plans to transfer to Liberty University. She participated in the AHS musical, Thoroughly Modern Millie, and was also cast for a one-act play, Mutsmag.
