Kelley Receives Highlands Community Bank Scholarship

Clifton Forge, VA (June 16, 2015) — Sarah Elizabeth Kelley has been awarded the Highlands Community Bank Scholarship by the Dabney S. Lancaster Community College Educational Foundation. The $3,400 award will assist with Kelley’s tuition and book expenses up to twenty-four credit hours at DSLCC for one year and is part of the nearly $100,000 the non-profit educational foundation has awarded in scholarships and grants for the 2015-2016 academic year.

Highlands Community Bank established the scholarship in 2005 to recognize outstanding high school graduates from the bank’s service area who are pursuing a degree in Business, Finance or Accounting. Awards alternate each year between Alleghany, Bath County, and Covington High Schools. “As a graduate of DSLCC and a Board Member of the DSLCC Educational Foundation, I feel that we are very fortunate to have Dabney S. Lancaster Community College in the Highlands”, said Highlands Community Bank CEO, H. C. Rhodes. “The College has such a positive impact on the communities it serves, and I am proud of Highlands Community Bank’s Board of Directors for creating this annual scholarship for a deserving student in our area. We are pleased to play a role in supporting Sarah’s efforts to pursue postsecondary education.”

Kelley’s nearly 3.9 grade point average is testimony to her outstanding academic achievement at Alleghany High School, where she earned an Advanced Studies Diploma. After earning an Associate of Arts and Sciences Degree in Business Administration and General Studies from DSLCC, Kelley plans to transfer to a four-year college or university to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting. Her goal is to earn a Master’s Degree in Accounting and to work as a management accountant for an accounting firm. While still a student at AHS, Kelley was enrolled in the pharmacy Technician Program at DSLCC. She also works as a babysitter.

Each year, the Educational Foundation invites local students to apply for thousands of dollars in scholarships for study at DSLCC. With tuition at four-year colleges and universities increasing at a rapid rate, DSLCC is the perfect choice for graduating high school seniors, as well as non-traditional students who did not enroll immediately upon graduation but decided at a later time to enhance their skills and knowledge level to gain marketable job skills, facilitate career advancement, or successfully change career paths.
