Reid Scholarships Awarded to Local Students

Clifton Forge, VA (June 15, 2015) — The Dabney S. Lancaster Community College Educational Foundation has awarded Merle Weaver Reid Scholarships to Covington residents, Abagail Cash and Kelsey Hayslett, who will begin studies at DSLCC this fall. The awards will assist with tuition and book expenses for one year at DSLCC and are part of nearly $100,000 the non-profit educational foundation has awarded in merit and need-based scholarships for the upcoming academic year.

Abagail Olivia Cash is a 2015 graduate of Alleghany High School. She will work towards an Associate of Arts and Sciences Degree in General Studies from DSLCC, after which she plans to explore a possible career in teaching by becoming a substitute teacher. Future plans may include transferring to a four-year college or university to receive a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and a minor in social work. Cash’s extracurricular activities at AHS included membership in the BETA Club and the Key Club. She has been employed as a cashier at Hardees since the summer of 2014.

Kelsey Marie Hayslett, a June graduate of Covington High School, is enrolled in DSLCC’s Advanced Healthcare and General Studies Curriculum and will complete prerequisites for entering the Associate Degree Nursing Program. After completing requirements for an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Nursing, her goal is to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in nursing, specializing in neonatal care. While a student at CHS, Hayslett’s extracurricular activities included membership in the FBLA, Character Counts Club, and HOSA, for which she served as Secretary. She also participated in the Rachel’s Challenge Club and was Secretary of the school’s SCA in the ninth grade. Hayslett was a cheerleader her freshman and senior years. Her involvement in the community included volunteering for the Alleghany Human Society, Salvation Army, God’s Covering, and other local non-profit organizations.

The Merle Weaver Reid Scholarships were established through a bequest from Mrs. Reid’s estate and are awarded to graduates of Alleghany or Covington High School who make DSLCC their college of choice. A native of Clifton Forge, Mrs. Reid lived for many years in Covington. She graduated from Clifton Forge High School and was employed by Dominion Bank for 38 years before retiring from the position of Head Bookkeeper.

A long-time member of Granbery United Methodist Church and the Philathea Sunday School Class, Mrs. Reid also was a former member of the Martha Chapter 21 Order of the Eastern Star, the Covington Womans Club, and served as treasurer of the Jackson River Garden Club. Mrs. Reid demonstrated her love of service to her community through her

volunteer efforts at Alleghany Regional Hospital, the Alleghany Highlands Arts and Crafts Center, and the Greater Alleghany United Fund.

The DSLCC Educational Foundation is dedicated to helping area residents change their lives through access to post-secondary education. The support of businesses, organizations and individuals in the College’s service area directly helps students who seek higher educational opportunities and contributes to the community at large. Ensuring that area residents have higher levels of education and workforce training not only supports existing business and industry, but also continues to be a critical factor for the economic development of the entire region.

In addition to the thousands of dollars the Foundation awards each year in scholarships, the non-profit organization also supports the college through the purchase of state-of-the art classroom and other technological equipment.
