Local Students Receive Dickson Scholarships

Clifton Forge, VA (June 18, 2015) — The Dabney S. Lancaster Community College Educational Foundation has awarded Helen F. Dickson Scholarships to Mikayla Andrews and Michael Rogers, local students who will begin their collegiate careers at DSLCC this fall.

The Helen F. Dickson Scholarship honors the memory of Miss Dickson who was born in the Callaghan area of Alleghany County. Throughout her lifetime, she reached out to others in her church, family, work, civic and community activities. She was the Youth Director at Granbery Memorial Methodist Church for fifteen years and worked with area youth on numerous community projects, generously giving of her time and devotion to these young people she so endearingly called “my kids.”

Limited family means and general financial conditions during the Depression conspired to prevent Miss Dickson from attending college, which was a source of disappointment and regret to her. Although she had no children of her own, she encouraged the young people whose lives she touched to continue their education after high school, emphasizing that it would broaden their perspectives, enhance their life opportunities, and improve the quality of life for future generations.

Mikayla Andrews recently graduated from Covington High School and will begin her collegiate career at DSLCC in the fall, with plans to transfer to a four year university and pursue a career in the medical profession. During her time at CHS, Andrews was Vice President of the BETA and FBLA Clubs and was a member of HOSA and the Friends of Rachel Club. She also was CHS Homecoming Queen and a candidate for Miss CHS. Andrews contributed to Cougar sports through her efforts on the Cheerleading Squad and Volleyball team. A sports medicine volunteer for CHS, she is CPR, First Aid, and AED Certified. In her community, Andrews has volunteered for the Alleghany Highlands Christmas Mother Program and Pumpkins in the Park. She is employed by the YMCA as a Child Watch/Fit Kids instructor.

A June graduate of Alleghany High School, Michael Rogers will begin his pursuit of a nursing career at DSLCC this fall. After completing an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Nursing, he plans to transfer to George Washington University to continue his education. His goal is to work in the emergency room while studying for his Master’s Degree and then to work as an obstetrics Nurse. In addition to his courses at AHS, Rogers also completed Emergency Medical courses at DLSCC and is a Certified Nursing Assistant. He was a member of the Health Occupation Students of America at the Jackson River Technical Center and a teen volunteer at Lewis Gale Alleghany Hospital. Rogers also is a member of the Falling Spring Rescue Squad. He has held several part-time jobs in the community.

The DSLCC Educational Foundation invites graduating senior from service-area high schools to apply each spring for scholarships. For more information about the Foundation or to make a donation, please contact the Foundation Office at (540) 863-2837 or via email at rthompson@dslcc.edu.
