DSLCC Offers Photography Series This Fall at Main Campus and Rockbridge Center

 
Clifton Forge, VA (Sept. 22, 2015) - Dabney S Lancaster Community College’s non-credit program has scheduled a series of four photography courses starting this fall at both the main campus in Clifton Forge and at the Rockbridge Regional Center (RRC) in Buena Vista. Professional photographer Chuck Almarez, owner and operator of Fire and Light Gallery in Clifton Forge, is the instructor. All main campus classes will be held from 6 to 9 pm in McCarthy Hall, Room 504. All RRC classes will be held from 6 to 9 pm in Room 906. Textbooks are not required.

“Beginning Digital Photography” is a four-night course and will be held at the main campus on Thursdays, October 8, 15, 22 and 29, and at the RRC on Mondays, at the RRC on Mondays, October 5, 12, 19 and 26. This course will familiarize students with the features and capabilities of modern digital cameras, including hands-on explanations of lenses, shutter speeds, apertures, and ISO settings and how each can affect the final image. Student will have a good understanding of how to use their camera controls for best results (especially for exposure) and how composition plays a critical part in art and photography. Tuition is $90.

“Introduction to Adobe Lightroom” is a four-night course and will be held at the main campus on Thursdays, November 5, 12, 19 and December 3, and at the RRC on Fridays, November 6, 13, 20 and December 4. Students will learn how to import, organize, rate and tag images, and then output them in a variety of ways: print, slideshow, books, and web galleries. By the end of the course students should understand how to import their images into Lightroom; how to edit, refine, or get creative using Lightroom tools; and how to output images to a variety of destinations. Tuition is $110.

“Beginning Photo Editing,” is a five-night course and will be held at the main campus on Thursdays, December 10 and 17, and January 7, 14 and 21, and at the RRC on Fridays, December 11 and 18 and January 8, 15 and 22. This course will familiarize students with image editing and refinement techniques using Adobe Photoshop Elements. Students will understand how the camera captures a digital image, how that image is processed in-camera, how to output the image to a computer for further refinement and processing, and the various methods for processing. Output and sharing options are also covered including output to print, slideshow, books, and email. Tuition is $180.

“Intermediate Photo Editing,” is a four-night course and will be held at the main campus on Thursdays, February 4, 11, 18 and 25, and at the RRC on Fridays, February 5, 12, 19 and 26. This course provides students an in depth look at the tools needed to create realistic photo compositions, how to restore damaged or faded photos, and how to colorize a black & white photo. In addition to understanding and using Layers, masks, & modes, students will also learn to use the various methods of selecting elements from one image and introducing them into another. In order to be successful in this class, students should have a good working knowledge of basic Photoshop functions including opening, closing, and saving a file. Completion of the “Beginning Photo Editing” course is strongly recommended. Tuition is $90.
