The Veterans Center at Dabney S. Community College has been open only since March, but already has helped a number of veterans and their spouses begin meeting their educational goals. Kevin Booze of Clifton Forge and Maranda Rowe Talley of Craigsville are two of the fulltime students the office has assisted. Booze joined the National Guard at age 34 and was deployed to Iraq in 2010. With a background in law enforcement —he was employed at the Augusta Correctional Center and with Washington and Lee University’s security department – he is now enrolled in the Administration of Justice Program at DSLCC. Talley, who is pursuing a degree in Business Management at DSLCC, was a manager at Little Caesar’s. Her husband, Andy, is also a National Guard veteran. Both Booze and Talley, who are receiving benefits through the Post 911 GI Bill, say that the Veterans Center at DSLCC has been extremely helpful in guiding them through the benefits program and enrolling them in classes. For more information about the Veterans Center at DSLCC, located in Room 644 in the DSLCCC Convention Center/Armory on the Clifton Forge campus, contact Rebecca Hise (540) 863-2856 or rhise@dslcc.edu. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 9 am to 3 pm.
