DSLCC Educational Foundation Announces New Board Members

 
Clifton Forge, VA (April 6, 2016) - The Dabney S. Lancaster Community College Educational Foundation is proud to announce the addition of four new Board members in 2016. Terms are a minimum of 3 years, but are unlimited.

     Nick Moga is the owner of PCSS, LLC, the oldest Information Technology support company in the Alleghany Highlands (founded 1985). Nick earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace & Ocean Engineering from Virginia Tech and a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from North Carolina State University. He has been a resident of the Alleghany Highlands for over 30 years. Nick is active in community activities, having served on the Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce Board (President), Bath County Chamber of Commerce Board (Vice President), Greater Alleghany United Fund (Treasurer), Alleghany Highlands Economic Development Authority, Alleghany Highlands Arts Council (President), Virginia Tech Alumni Association and the Salvation Army. Nick currently is a member of the Alleghany Highlands Kiwanis Club, Jackson River Enterprises Board of Directors, Scott Hill Board of Directors (President), Founder and Director of Highlands Community Bank and Emmanuel Episcopal Church (Treasurer). Nick has served as an Adjunct professor at DSLCC. His wife of 38 years, Nancy Moga, is Principal of Callaghan Elementary School. The Mogas live in Clearwater Park with their cat Jill.

     Steven Downs currently serves as CFO/CSO at LewisGale Hospital Alleghany. Steven earned his B.A. from the University of Houston and his MBA/MHA from the University of Houston Clear Lake. He has enjoyed 18 years of work in the healthcare administration field, including work as CFO at Muskogee Regional Medical Center in Oklahoma and over 4 years at LifePoint Hospitals in Louisiana, during which time he worked his way from CFO to COO to CEO. In the local community, he has served on the Board of the Covington-Hot Springs Rotary, as Treasurer of the Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce, and on the Red Cross Board. Steven resides in Alleghany County with his wife, Michelle, and son, Nicholas.

Mrs. Jackie R. Stephenson, a resident of Warm Springs, VA is retired from the Bath County Public Schools, where she served as a teacher and administrator for 29 of her 37 years in public education. She also taught in Johnson County (TN), Sullivan County (TN), and Washington County (VA). Mrs. Stephenson graduated from Abingdon (VA) High School, attended Emory & Henry College, received her BS degree from East Tennessee State University and received an MEd. degree from the University of Virginia. In her retirement, she is involved with several community volunteer programs and spends her personal time reading, doing needlework, quilting, and gardening. Mrs. Stephenson has a daughter, Jessica, and son-in-law, Matt Reaves, both of whom are emplyed by the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland; Jessica is with the JHU School of Education and Matt is with the JHU Applied Physics Lab. Jessica graduated from Bath County High School with several dual enrollment courses through DSLCC, all of which were accepted by Virginia Tech where she received her undergraduate degree. She completed a master's degree from U.VA and returned to Virginia Tech where she continues to do post graduate work on a PhD in Science Education. Matt received his undergraduate work at the University of Arkansas, a master's degree in Optical Physics at the Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, NY and is currently completing requirements for a second master's degree in Electrical Engineering at U.VA.

In speaking of her appointment to the Foundation Board, Mrs. Stephenson stated, "I am honored to have been invited to join the DSLCC Educational Foundation Board. Our communities are so fortunate to have DSLCC available to our youth and adults as well. I look forward to working with the Board to further promote the goals and objectives of the Foundation."

     Kathy Landreth, originally from Pulaski, Virginia, has worked in healthcare for over 35 years, 25 of those within the Carilion Clinic Hospital System.   She has also held adjunct faculty positions at both Radford University and Jefferson College. She has served on other boards including the New River Valley Health Foundation and the Bath County Chamber of Commerce.   She received her Associates Degree in Nursing from Wytheville Community College, her Bachelors in Business Administration from Averett University and her MBA from the University of Phoenix.  She also holds a certificate from the Harvard Law School Executive Education for Negotiation and Leadership.  Kathy and her husband Rodney have made their home in Hot Springs, Virginia. They are both avid sports enthusiasts, especially football at all levels and enjoy spending time with the family. The family includes 6 children and 3 grandchildren.  She understands the importance of continuing education and looks forward to serving the area as a member of the Board.

     Current Foundation Board President, Elaine Nelson of Lexington, shared her excitement over the new members, saying, “I am absolutely delighted to welcome our four new Board members, who epitomize a dedicated effort to quality education and community involvement – both of which are critically important to the Foundation.  We boast a quality, enthusiastic, and dynamic Board, and our new members will further enhance it.  I am confident that they will contribute significantly in advancing the Foundation’s mission of effecting positive change in the lives of our students and supporting the vision of DSLCC.â€

Established in 1980, the DSLCC Educational Foundation awards annual merit and need-based scholarships to students in the service area, which includes Alleghany, Bath, northern Botetourt, and Rockbridge counties, as well as the cities of Covington, Buena Vista, and Lexington and the town of Clifton Forge. Throughout its history, the Foundation has awarded more than $1.5 million in scholarships.
