WESTROCK’S COVINGTON MILL ANNOUNCES POSITION CHANGES

 
COVINGTON, VA (May 13, 2016) -WestRock’s Covington mill announces position changes that were internally announced in April.

Dan Chappel has accepted the position of bleach room supervisor. In this position, he is responsible for A, B, and C bleaching units, the chlorine dioxide plant, and chemical unloading.

Chappel earned his degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of British Columbia and began his career in 1985 as production engineer and shift supervisor for Northwood Pulp in British Columbia. In 1997, he accepted the position of pulp mill superintendent at Georgia Pacific in Camas, Washington, and in 2007, he became chip supply, digester, and OCC area manager at Simpson in Tacoma, Washington. Chappel joined NewPage/Verso in Wisconsin Rapids as pulp mill technical lead in 2008 and accepted the position of senior process engineer at the Covington mill in 2015.

Russell Fisher has accepted the position of safety manager. In this position, he is responsible for the Covington Operations’ health and safety.

Fisher received his B.S. in Health and Physical Education from the Citadel in 1991, an A.S. in Hazardous Materials Technology from Chattanooga State in 1993, and a Master’s degree in Public Health in Environmental Science from the University of South Carolina in 1995. He passed certification examinations as a Certified Industrial Hygienist in 2002 and a Certified Safety Professional in 2008. In April 1996, Fisher joined Alcoa’s Mount Holly Works in South Carolina as an industrial hygienist. He transferred to Alcoa’s Tennessee Operations as a departmental safety coordinator in 1998 before becoming staff industrial hygienist in 2000. Fisher was promoted to industrial hygiene manager at Alcoa’s Massena Operations in New York in 2008 and joined the Covington mill in 2012 as safety and shared business support. He also served as a Chemical Officer in the United States Army Reserve from 1991 – 1999 and is currently serving in the Vermont Air National Guard as a Bio-Environmental Engineer.

Jeff Carmack has accepted the position of Human Resources manager for the Covington mill. In this position, he is responsible for providing resource support to the Paper Mill, Fiberline, Power, and Recovery departments.

Carmack earned his B.A. in Business Administration from LaGrange College in Georgia. In 1998, he joined International Paper as human resources generalist in Courtland, Alabama, and in 2003, he accepted the position of human resources manager in Texarcana, Texas. Carmack transferred to the Augusta, Georgia mill as human resources manager in 2008 before accepting the position of human resource manager at the Selma, Alabama plant. Most recently, he was the human resources manager at Armstrong Flooring in Beverly, West Virginia, a position he began in 2015.

Carson Barry has accepted the position of continuous improvement engineer. In this position, he is responsible for identifying and implementing productivity improvements in the Power and Recovery areas. He will also work with the performance excellence group as a resource to engineers learning lean six sigma tools.

Barry earned his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Penn State University in 1982 and his M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from West Virginia University in 1990. He joined the Westvaco Luke mill in 1983 as a technical services engineer. He worked in the Technical Services department for a year, then moved to Design Engineering for three years as a project engineer. In 1987, Barry accepted the position of power engineer in the Power and Recovery department where he held several positions before becoming the assistant Power and Recovery superintendent in 1995. He joined the business excellence group of NewPage as a Black Belt in 2006 and became the Luke mill Master Black Belt in 2010. Barry rejoined the Power and Recovery department in 2011 as superintendent and moved back to the business excellence group as the training coordinator in 2013. Most recently, he worked as a Master Black Belt for the E&J Gallo Winery in Modesto, California.
