DSLCC Hosts Practical Nursing Pinning Ceremony

Clifton Forge, VA (May 13, 2016) Dabney S. Lancaster Community College hosted the annual Pinning Ceremony to honor the ten graduates of its Practical Nursing program May 11 at Rockbridge County High School.

DSLCC President Dr. John Rainone acknowledged the hard work and dedication that had been shown by the students who completed the program. He thanked the faculty and staff who served as role models for the students as well as the families and friends of each graduate who supported the efforts put forth by the participants to ensure their successful completion of the ten-month program.

Halei Taylor, president of the Practical Nursing Class of 2016, thanked the teachers and tutor who guided them through the program and led them on the right path leading up to graduation.

Guest speaker was Susan Snyder, RN, who served as a tutor during the academic year. She encouraged the students to maintain the close bonds that they formed throughout the program, namely “bonds of friendship, teamwork, and survival”. Snyder referred to the students’ entry into “the highly-regarded field of healthcare” and stressed to the graduates that in spite of the many advanced procedures and technologies that are an integral part of health services today, they should never forget to “celebrate those ‘human moments’ with patients and families” that make the real difference in their lives”.

Devon Nicely, who served as adjunct faculty, thanked PN Program director Penny Fauber for her leadership. Nicely and Fauber conducted the pinning and lamp-lighting ceremony, a tradition that honors the legacy of Florence Nightingale who tended to soldiers during the Crimean War, making rounds by the light of her lamp. Several speakers had mentioned that each year, May 6 begins National Nurses Week, ending on May 12, Florence Nightingale’s birthday, and commented that it was especially meaningful to hold the PN ceremony during the week held each year to honor the “Lady with the Lamp”.

The ten graduates include: Mandy Mayberry of Millboro; Kim McCune of Hot Springs; Jennifer McPherson and Casey Brooks, both of Roanoke; Ashley Jones of Blue Ridge; Jessica Sizemore of Low Moor; Amber Hartless of Vesuvius; Halei Taylor of Fairfield; Anthony Vess of Buena Vista; and Fran Grady of Covington. All of the graduates also received Certificates in Practical Nursing during the annual Commencement Exercises held May 13 on the DSLCC Clifton Forge campus.

Fauber reported that many of the graduates have been offered positions and hope to begin employment in the near future at a variety of healthcare facilities throughout the local area. For more information about the PN program at DSLCC, contact Fauber at (540) 458-3299 or pfauber@dslcc.edu.
