New Arts Management Program Begins This Fall at DSLCC

Clifton Forge, VA (June 2, 2016) - Dabney S. Lancaster Community College is registering now for fall courses in a new Career Studies Certificate program that will introduce students to Arts Management. The courses will cover topics that support arts-based organizations and contribute to their sustained success.

This new program was developed with input from numerous community partners involved in arts-based organizations. After an assessment of needs was completed, the courses were selected based on topics that were of interest to most of the organizations. The program does not prepare individuals for performing, but focuses on the many back-of-the-house functions that must be completed before, during and after performances, shows, displays, and special events.

Introduction to the Arts will provide an overview of local and regional organizations that are based on visual or performing arts. The format will include guest speakers and visits to several venues. The instructor for the course will be Tondalaya Van Lear.

Fund-raising and Development for the Arts will take a step-by-step approach to securing the resources necessary for the operation and future growth of any non-profit organization. The instructor for this course will be DSLCC President Dr. John Rainone who has extensive experience in fund-raising for educational and cultural organizations, as well as with guiding development plans for a variety of community service groups and non-profit organizations. The class will meet on Monday evenings, 5:30-8:15 pm.

Financial Management will address various topics dealing with the financial side of organizations that are non-profit; the focus will be on the arts but the course would be valuable for anyone who works or serves as a volunteer in a non-profit organization. The class will meet on Wednesday evenings, 5:30- 8:15 pm.

Eligible residents of Greenbrier, Monroe, Pocahontas, Mercer and Summers counties may enroll in DSLCC at Virginia in-state tuition rates. Call (540) 863-2820 to make an appointment with an academic advisor, complete an application for admission, file for financial assistance, and plan a schedule for the Fall Semester. Classes begin the week of August 22. Visit www.dslcc.edu
