Field Day For Amateur Radio At Old Jeter Watson School Set June 25th By Kyle Bennett, KM4KZV and Janet Smith, KK4ZDK.   Covington, VA (June 21, 2016) - This Saturday, June 25th at 2 pm is Field Day for Amateur Radio. It is where Hams across the U.S. set up their gear and test their knowledge for when an emergency happens. Never know when a bad storm will come around and cell phones will be out for a number of days or weeks and all that can get out is our amateur radios. We have a local club that sets up at the old Jeter Watson Middle School on Pine St. That is where we would operate if there was an emergency of some kind. It will be open to the public to see how we operate and answer questions. We are always looking for new members and getting tests is easy to do. This is a 24 hour event. June 25th 2 p.m. to June 26th 5 p.m. The Virginia Mountain Amateur Radio Club, based in Covington, will recognize the annual "Field Day" starts Sat. June 25th 2 p.m. through Sun.June 26th 5 p.m. at the club emergency operation center located at the former Jeter Watson Middle School on Pine St. Field day is observed by all amateur radio operators through out the United States. the objective of field day for each operator to contact as many other operators as they can. In doing so, amateur radio operators demonstrate their readiness to respond to emergencies in which normal communications are down like cell phones was in the derecheo. in addition in emergency preparedness, field day gives the public a view what is involved in amateur radio and members of the radio club encourage new people to become radio operators and maybe join the local club. a amateur radio licence is not necessary to join club but we offer tests sessions for anyone interested and our club meets on the first Monday of the month at 6:30 p.m. You can contact anyone in our club for more information including Gene Wood, WA4PGI club president, Ricky Lacks, KC4ZTD, Janet Smith KK4ZDK or Kyle Bennett, KM4KZV, just to name a few.
