Clifton Forge To Buy Lawler Land Rights; Approves Alumni Alcohol Request
Other Meetings In July Cancelled
By Jerry E. Clark

Clifton Forge, VA (July 11, 2016) - The Clifton Forge Town Council made short work of it tonight with just a very few agenda items getting fast approval.

And, the council decided to dispense with its other meetings for the month of July due to a lack of agenda items.

The council:

• approved (after dispensing with the second reading) an ordinance which allowed for the inclusion of two sections of the town code which were inadvertently left out when the Code of Ordinances were re-codified last year.

• a request to allow the Clifton Forge High School Alumni classes of 1965-1968 to apply for an alcohol license for a "sock hop" on the evening of September 23, 2016 at the Clifton Forge Armory. The council discussed this item a while but unanimously later approved it. For video of that discussion at which Susie Jenkins Mullikin appeared, click here.

• held a first reading of a resolution to purchase the unplatted lands, streets and alleys from Virginia Lawler - in sections 1, 2 and 3 of the Clifton Forge Company and a 20 foot strip of land that lies adjacent to the exterior boundary lines of the Clifton Forge Company for $5,000. Here they are discussing the acquisition of those land rights. For video please click here.

• announced that the Summer Meals Program for Kids began on June 6, 2016 and will continue through July 28, 2016 at the Clifton Forge Fire Station from 11:30 a.m. - 12"30 p.m. Meals will be provided to all children 18 years or younger free.

• heard Dianne Kling Smith promote the downtown Farmer's Market once again, while noting that some local musicians also had turned out for the regular Friday event. Here she is: on this subject.

Manager's Comments

Town manager Darlene Burcham complimented Clifton Forge Main Main on the 4th of July celebration, including the excellent fireworks held last Saturday evening.

She also noted that a change in the ownership of local grocery store, Save-A-Lot had occurred and that another special re-opening ceremony is being planned. She also reminded citizens that trash cans needed covers due to animal invasion problems. For a video of her remarks, please click here.

Council Member Comments

Various council members noted the 4th of July events, fine fireworks and recent events at the Masonic Theatre. All of their comments are available in a video here.

(Attendance remains pitiful at council meetings, but that may be due, at least in part, to the disrespectful attitude of town council by not having microphones set up so that visitors may hear the proceedings).
