Little Brown Jug Now At Clifton Forge Public Library

Clifton Forge, VA (August 29, 2016) - The Clifton Forge High School Alumni are delighted to have a display at the Clifton Forge Public Library during August and September. The display highlights two very important times in the school’s history. The first is the Little Brown Jug.

In 1937, before the Clifton Forge Covington football game, Covington had already been awarded the district title even though Clifton Forge had not lost any games. According to district rules, Clifton Forge was not eligible because its’ team had not played all of the teams in the league. Coach Pop Kaye and the Covington Coach discussed the matter and decided there should be a trophy for that night’s game.

A jug was resting on the coach’s desk. He picked it up and decided it would do just fine! Clifton Forge won that game but not very many thereafter; however, in 1982, it was decided that whoever won the final game was to keep the precious jug. Clifton Forge won that game.

When the Clifton Forge Alumni Association was formed in 1996 and the Clifton Forge High School trophies were given to the Association by Alleghany High School, for some unknown reason, the Little Brown Jug was not included. It had found its way back to Covington.

Also on display and just as memorable to the alumni is the 1965-66 Boys State Basketball Championship trophy along with the net that was cut down after they won. The team had gone undefeated the previous year but had fallen short of the championship and were determined to win this one. This was a very special year as it was the first year of integration in the Clifton Forge public schools. The students wanted to prove to everyone that it made no difference to them - we were all friends and now we were also classmates and teammates.

Many thanks to Councilman and Clifton Forge Alumni Association member Jeff Irvine for getting the Little Brown Jug back to Clifton Forge for this display. A loving thank you, too, to the Association’s co-founder, Tom Dean, who was most valuable player in that basketball game in 1965 and will always be most valuable player in our hearts.

The Clifton Forge Public Library is located at 535 Church Street. For information on any library programs and activities, call 863-2519.
