Jerry’s Run, Big Run, So Big, Crows Run and Crows Run Spur Roads Temporarily Closed Due to Storm Damage

Covington, VA (August 29, 2016) – The USDA Forest Service has issued an emergency road closure order for Forest Road (FR) 69 Jerry’s Run, FR 600 Big Run, FR 366 So Big, FS 277 and 277A Crows Run and Crows Run Spur in Alleghany County due to the major storm event experienced by the region on June 23, 2016. This storm event has made these roads unsafe for vehicle travel.

Gates to the seasonal roads Big Run, So Big, and Crows Run are currently closed and will remain closed until further assessment can be made. Jerry’s Run road is closed just past the road’s crossing of Jerry’s Run creek where a significant landslide occurred. The Forest Service is seeking storm damage funds in order to repair these roads to make them safe for travel while also providing for resource protection.

“We will further assess the damage to make a determination about the future management of these roads,” stated District Ranger Elizabeth McNichols. “The purpose of the closure is to ensure public safety and prevent further impacts of erosion and sedimentation in our streams and rivers.”

For additional information, please contact District Ranger Elizabeth McNichols, (540) 962-2214 or (540)839-2521.
