Chuck Almarez of the Fire & Light Gallery on the ground floor of the Alleghany building lost many prints as a result of substantial water damage, but was able to save the vast majority of his photographic equipment. He took several photos of the scene, including this one of his shop. He has posted many others on his Facebook page.

Alleghany Building In Downtown Clifton Forge Has Small Fire
By Jerry E. Clark

Clifton Forge, VA (Sept. 26, 2016) - An early evening fire on Sunday has resulted in what one witness estimated to be about $30,000-$40,000 in damage to the Alleghany Building in the downtown section of town on E. Ridgeway Street across from the SonaBank.

There were no injuries although there was one report of a brief bit of smoke inhalation by one resident.

A grease fire in a third floor apartment caused a fire extinguisher to be used, and the built-in sprinker system went off, resulting in water damage to several apartment and at least two businesses located on the ground floor: Livy's Closet and the Fire & Light Gallery.

About 20 residents of the building were taken to the Clifton Forge Fire Department and with the cooperation of the Red Cross, fire department personnel and the efforts of Ryan Muterspaugh, director of public safety for Alleghany County, were given hotel rooms for the night.

Power was cut off to the building and there has not been a return date supplied for residents, mainly low-income residents, to return.

The Journal will keep readers informed as more details become available.
