Financial Aid Workshops Scheduled at Area High Schools

Clifton Forge, VA (Sept. 28, 2016) - The Educational Talent Search Staff of Dabney S. Lancaster Community College will be holding a series of Financial Aid workshops in the month of October in cooperation with the Guidance Offices of local schools. It is particularly important for the parents of seniors to attend, but juniors and their parents are also welcome.

Rockbridge High School will hold their workshop on Tuesday, October 4, at 6 pm in the cafeteria.

On Tuesday, October 11, there will be three workshops: Bath County High School at 5:00 pm in the BCHS Library; Covington High School at 2:30 pm in the auditorium and PMHS will hold their workshop at 5:30 in the Library.

On October 12, Alleghany High School will hold their parent workshop at 6 pm in the band room. Parents are welcome to attend any workshops at any school.

Parents and students should be aware of a significant change in the FAFSA this year. It can now be submitted after October 1 and many schools have moved up their Financial Aid deadlines to early November and December. Previously, the FAFSA was not able to be completed until after January 1. With the rising cost of tuition at all colleges, it is more important than ever for parents and students to file for financial aid by the deadlines set by each school. These workshops will provide copies of forms that are needed, a list of necessary documents, dates of school deadlines, and people on hand to answer individual questions.

Parents will learn about getting their FSA IDs, filling out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and about the types of financial aid that are available to their student. They will also be able to learn about individual college priority filing dates and Talent Search participants will have an opportunity to make an appointment with a Talent Search Counselor to get assistance in filling out the FAFSA. College financial aid includes grants, scholarships, loans, and work study, so any student planning to include one or more of these as part of their plan to pay for college must file a FAFSA. Any student who is planning to attend a four-year college, a two-year college or a technical school should plan to attend this workshop and to fill out the FAFSA. Parents or students wanting more information can call their respective high school guidance office or the Educational Talent Search office at 863-2874.
