Brown Bag Book Club Meets October 20, 2016

Clifton Forge, VA (Oct. 14, 2016) - The Clifton Forge Public Library’s Brown Bag Book Club will meet on Thursday, October 20.

The group will discuss “Elephant Company,” by Vicki Croke. James Howard “Billy” Williams, drawn by the lure of working with the world’s largest land animals, accepted a job in the teak business in 1920. He soon developed a remarkable bond with the elephants of Burma. Impressed with their intelligence, courage, kindness, and humor, he believed that just living with them made him a better man. He worked to cure their ills and he fought for their humane care. Over time, Williams’ uncanny rapport with the elephants transformed him from a carefree young man into the charismatic war hero known as Elephant Bill.

Sara Gruen, writing in “The New York Times Book Review”, hails this story as being about “far more than just the war, or even elephants. This is the story of friendship, loyalty and breathtaking bravery that transcends species. It is a sweeping tale, masterfully written.”

The group meets from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., in the Library’s Michael Armstrong Community Room.

New members are always welcome.  Participants are encouraged to bring a friend and to bring a lunch. Dessert will be provided.
