Training Opportunity for Volunteer Board Members
Event Set At DSLCC On April 11; Registration Required

 
Clifton Forge, VA (March 22, 2017) - The Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce & Tourism and The Alleghany Foundation are pleased to present a free training workshop open to board members and staff of local nonprofits.

The 3-hour workshop will take place Tuesday, April 11, 2017, 9:00 am to 12 noon at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College, room 502. Space is limited, so registration is required.

The workshop is presented by the Center for Nonprofit Excellence (CNE). Located in Charlottesville, VA, CNE is a regional resource center that provides tools, trainings, resources and consulting to nonprofit organizations to assist in strengthening organizational leadership, management and collaboration to maximize their community impact.

This training is designed to help board members and staff to better understand the board’s role in board governance, and will cover key governance topics, including:

     â€˘     Board and Executive Director’s roles and responsibilities;

     â€˘     Board’s role in resource development;

     â€˘     Board recruitment & retention;

     â€˘     The importance of an annual budgeting process; and,

     â€˘     Understanding the year-to-date actuals and fiduciary responsibility.

Teresa Hammond, Executive Director, Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce & Tourism stated, “This workshop will provide and enhance the skills of our area board members to help them better understand their roles in the governance of their boards and nonprofits.”

“The Alleghany Foundation looks forward to providing this type of training for area nonprofit boards,” commented Mary Fant Donnan, Executive Director, The Alleghany Foundation. “In a survey of grantees conducted in the summer of 2016, one of the training needs identified was about board members’ roles and responsibilities. We feel this workshop will increase the working knowledge of each member which they will take back to strengthen their organizations’ governance,” she added.
