Stars & Stripes Celebration In Clifton Forge May 29, 2017

Clifton Forge, VA (April 26, 2017) - The Clifton Forge Main Street Stars and Stripes Committee, has been at work since January making plans for a grand patriotic celebration in 2017.

The organization has selected as the theme for this year's celebration: "World War 1 & 2 Memorials."

We have chosen this theme in keeping with the State of Virginia’s WW 1 & 2 Memorial Commission created to honor the significant anniversaries regarding WW 1 & 2.

The organization has asked downtown businesses to decorate their storefronts in red, white and blue, by May 29th and leave that decor in place through July 5th.

"The Stars and Stripes Committee is also urging you to join them in “Honoring those who Served” by featuring a picture(s) of someone in your window that you would like to honor for their service in the armed forces. It could be an employee, a family member, friend, or neighbor, living or dead, who served our country. Perhaps one of your employees knows someone they would like to see honored. We hope you will honor more than one person," a news release indicated.

In the Clifton Forge Main Street window, we plan to feature the 3 Medal of Honor winners who came from the Alleghany Highlands.

"Did you know that 3 is a very high number of honorees from such a small area? We will show a photograph of that citation, display a brief description of the meaning of that honor, as well as a description of the specific act of bravery for which each recipient was honored. We have obtained a list of all the cadet nurses from the Highlands that served in World War II and that will also be on display."

The Stars and Stripes Committee is working hard to have this year’s celebration be a truly community-wide event beginning Memorial Day, May 29th. Please join us in “Honoring those who Served” in your business from May 29th through July 5th.
