Michaela Ilyse Miller of Clifton Forge was the recipient of the Gary Lee Miller Outstanding Student Award during Dabney S. Lancaster Community College’s 50th annual commencement exercises Friday night. Presenting the award on behalf of the DSLCC Student Senate was DSLCC Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Benjamin Worth. Ms. Miller is a graduate of the Jackson River Governor’s School, a founding member of the DSLCC Art Club, a member of Phi Theta Kappa, is on the President’s List for academic achievement, volunteers as a pre-calculus tutor, and actively serves in various capacities at Immanuel Baptist Church. She earned an Associate’s degree in Science and will attend Virginia Tech in the fall to begin working on a Bachelor’s degree in Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise Science. The award is named after Gary Lee Miller, a Covington High School graduate and who was the recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor.

DSLCC Hosts 50th Annual Commencement Exercises

CLIFTON FORGE( VA (May 16, 2017) - More than 200 students received a total of over 400 associate degrees, certificates and career studies certificates during the 50th annual commencement exercises at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College on Friday, May 12.

“You don’t need to be a CEO or a company president to be a leader,” said Virginia Community College System Chancellor Dr. Glenn DuBois, in his address to the graduates and their families and friends, as he recounted his own experience as a reluctant student persuaded by his mother to apply to and attend college. “And you don’t need to be a formal, certified classroom instructor to be a teacher.

“You just have to remember three things: First, great leaders and great teachers know that in order for something to have value, you have to work for it. There’s a reason not everyone tries to go to college. It takes hard work. There’s a reason that not everybody who starts college finishes it. It takes hard work. There’s a reason why not everyone holds a college credential. It takes hard work. The value of that credential comes from all the hard work it represents.

“Second, great leaders and great teachers are always looking for ways to up the goal. There are always ways to do more and to be more. There are always ways to help more people. There are always ways to answer questions and solve problems. Great leaders and great teachers are never satisfied with the status quo.

“And third, great leaders and great teachers can get more out of someone than that person can get out of themselves. It can be a push or a pull. It can be a kick in the pants or a pat on the back. It can be a disappointing look or an encouraging word. Great military leaders throughout history, great coaches throughout sports, and great managers throughout modern organizations understand this. Helping someone overcome a big obstacle can be just a matter of getting them out of their own way.

“So, no matter where your journey takes you next, I urge you to find ways to be a great leader and that great teacher,” Dr. DuBois concluded. “Don’t just look for one. Be one.”

Olson Recognized for 50th Commencement

Adjunct faculty member Bruce Olson, recognized by DSLCC President Dr. John Rainone for completing his 50th year as a member of the staff at DSLCC, received a standing ovation. “Bruce was hired by the college’s first president, allowed two other presidents to work here and is now is keeping his eye on the fourth,” noted Dr. Rainone.

Addressing the graduates, Dr. Rainone said “You will treasure this day, and the memories of your last year for the rest of your life. Of course, commencement is about much more than saying goodbye. Today’s ceremony also provides us with the opportunity to reflect on the spirit that defines your class; to celebrate the knowledge that you have acquired and created; and to look forward to the exciting potential that you offer.

“When I reflect on the enormous contributions you have made to our community, I am optimistic about the future of our institution, the State, and our global community,” he continued. “Your class, reflective of your generation, shares values that our society needs: a dedication to service; a genuine concern for the environment and for sustainable living; tolerance of different views and lifestyles; and an understanding of the importance of collaboration across and within communities. Our goal at DSLCC is to equip each of you with the knowledge and skills to act on your values and make the world a better place. I have already witnessed your class making a difference.”

“We know that DSLCC graduates have character,” said Dr. Rainone, pointing to the fact that in the graduating class, there are veterans, those who work two or three part time jobs to make ends meet, those who juggle work, family and school, and those with disabilities.

Outstanding Graduate Award

The Gary Lee Miller Outstanding Graduate Award was presented to Michaela Ilyse Miller of Clifton Forge. The Gary Lee Miller Outstanding Graduate Award honors First Lieutenant Gary Lee Miller, a Covington native who was killed in action in Vietnam. Lt. Miller, a 1965 graduate of Covington High School, attended DSLCC before joining the Army. The award was presented by Vice President of Academic Affairs Benjamin Worth on behalf of the DSLCC Student Government Association.

“On February 16, 1969, while Lt. Miller was on patrol with his battalion, they were attacked and he was seriously wounded,” noted Dr. Worth. “During the engagement, an enemy grenade was thrown at the patrol and, in spite of his wounds, Lt. Miller threw himself on the grenade to save his men. His battalion nominated him for the Congressional Medal of Honor, which was awarded to Lt. Miller posthumously for his “extraordinary courage and selflessness.”

In addition to this building being named for Lt. Miller, Miller Hall stands at Fort Benning, GA, in his honor.

Michaela Miller is a graduate of the Jackson River Governor’s School, a founding member of the DSLCC Art Club, a member of Phi Theta Kappa, is on the President’s List for academic achievement, volunteers as a pre-calculus tutor, and actively serves in various capacities at Immanuel Baptist Church. She holds a cumulative 4.0 GPA, earned an Associate’s degree in Science one year removed from high school, and will attend Virginia Tech in the fall to begin working on a Bachelor’s degree in Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise Science.

Student, Alumni Speakers

Student speaker Susan Keith of Iron Gate, who received an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Nursing, challenged her fellow graduates to “never give up” when pursuing their dreams. Keith, the winner of the 2017 Wilson Cup for Scholarship, Character, and Community from our Educational Foundation, served as a mentor and active member of the Nursing Student Association. “The reality is that we will hit road blocks along the way – but that’s okay, think outside the box, go to plan B C or D, if you have to. But don’t give up. Dreams don’t have expiration dates. Life is only limited if we allow it. Learn from your mistakes and accept challenges. Most importantly we should never get so caught up in the stress of the journey that we should forget the beauty of the goal.”

Steven Leitch, managing director of Production for Berkley Point Capital LLC and a native of Clifton Forge, served as alumni speaker, a new addition this year to the commencement ceremony. Leitch was honored as the first recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award. He is a 1987 graduate of Alleghany High School; a 1989 DSLCC graduate; and a 1992 University of Virginia graduate.

He recounted his days working in the grill at DSLCC under the tutelage of the late Rob Drewry, who served for many years as vice president of finance for the College. “It was a lot of fun and provided me with structure and a chance to get to know my classmates,” said Leitch.

His advice for the current graduates: “Work hard, find something you’re passionate about, find a mentor, and keep an eye out for luck” and other opportunities. Leitch said that two of the most successful people he knows are successful not because of the amount of money they make, but because they’re passionate about what they do for a living and they have a solid work ethic.

The working world will always be competitive, he said, and he also advised the graduates to cultivate friends and make connections in the work place.

Class Profile

Following the presentation of the diplomas, Rainone provided a profile of the class of 2017: 62% of the class received Associate Degrees; 28% started with DSLCC through high school dual enrollment; 26% took classes primarily at the DSLCC Rockbridge Regional Center in Buena Vista; 52% took summer courses; 84% are either employed or plan to transfer to a 4-year college or university immediately.

In addition, Rainone noted several outstanding examples of DSLCC students:

Lizzie Baker of Covington and Aaron Loan of Millboro will be receiving honors medallions from the Governor’s Office for earning an Associate’s Degree while still in high school.

Two mothers, Cristina Cahoon of Clifton Forge and Heather Whitt of Greenbrier County, WV, graduated with their son and daughter, respectively: Patrick Cahoon and Danielle Whitt.

Chloe Bruce of Hot Springs is a 3rd generation student and 4th member of her family to graduate from DSLCC. Her sister, mother and grandmother all are DSLCC graduates in nursing. Chloe chose Education and was also a member of the 2017 All-Virginia Academic Team.

Hollie Bess of Covington was also named to the All-Virginia Academic Team while Katie Boggs of Covington received the 2016-17 Valley Proteins Scholar from the Virginia Foundation for Community College Education, only the second student from DSLCC to do so.
