Amateur Radio Club Sets 'Field Day' Event June 24-25

Covington, VA (May 23, 2017) - Field Day is ham radio's open house. Every June, more than 40,000 hams throughout North America set up temporary transmitting stations in public places to demonstrate ham radio's science, skill and service to local communities and the nation. It combines public service, emergency preparedness, community outreach, and technical skills all in a single event. Field Day has been an annual event since 1933, and remains the most popular event in ham radio.

The Virginia Mountain Amateur Radio Club plans to set up operations at the old Jeter Watson Middle School (515 E. Pine St., Covington) on June 24 at 2 p.m. and will conduct an event through June 25th at 2 p.m.

Amateur radio operators often help police, fire, the Red Cross and even the Federal Emergency Management Administration when cellphones are down and the only way to communicate is via radio.

Radio operators need to be licensed to talk on the air and the club gives tests to anyone. There are three different types of licenses: technician, general and extra class. Morse Code knowledge is no longer required.

The club meets the first Monday every month at the old Jeter Watson school unless that Monday is a holiday. at 6:30 pm, test sessions start at 5:30 p.m.

Potential members may contact Janet Smith or Ricky Lacks at 540-958-5475.
